in light of our government's over zealous passion to spend massive amounts of money, i thought it time to familiarize myself with just how massive the money is. trillions? billions? millions? billions of trillions? or is it trillions of billions? ... all of which will never wind up in my bank account and therefore i haven't the slightest understanding of just how humongous it all is. these calculations are approximate, but i hope this puts things into perspective: (thanks to kelly's aunt judy for sending this!)
a billion seconds ago it was 1959.
a billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
a billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the stone age.
a billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
a billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
this doesn't even begin to touch on how much a trillion is. phew.

may we all be reminded that these don't really exist.

Love this.
Great post. And your right, money does not grow on trees. Trillions? Makes me sick thinking about it.
I am amazed at how many people lives their lives like they have a money tree thriving in their back yard! And I don't think I need to even get started on the whole government/money/healthcare stuff!
I love this post. Please submit to Hannity ;)
Wow, I love this. It makes me so sad that our goverment is spending that much money when we can't even pay for it. Eventually they are going to run out of other peoples money, and then what? I think I will post a link to this on my fb.
i wish we could talk to barsha about this.
If only money did grow on trees, huh? That'd be nice!
Wowza!! That is just so hard to even comprehend, it is SO crazy. Those trees sure don't exist in my neck of the woods! :)
very interesting (and scary)!
Whoa
Oh my goodness.. It's so hard to process how much a billion dollars is (it seems like fake money to me hah!) but when you put it into seconds, minutes, years, etc...It seems so real. Oh our crazy government :)
wow, really does put things into prespective doesnt it?
Too bad money DOESN'T grow on trees. I'd love a money tree right about now.
I agree with several of the other commentors, you are an amazing writer! A couple of time I have been reading blog posts and all the sudden they have lost my interest, I just kept getting drawn into your post. :) I really enjoyed reading it!

Great post! Can you please forward it to Obama and crazy eyed Nancy! I don't think they get it! Thank you!
That is a cool way to think of it... I SO wish that there were money trees! lol
So glad you shared this, apparently though our government does this that money grows on trees. I can't say anymore without getting frustrated.
That was suppose to say that they do think money grows on trees, see how frustrated I am?
this totally puts things in perspective for me. i agree, a lot of the time i read the news and see just a number. perhaps i don't look into it further because it is so disheartening to think about it.
Yikes... scary right?!
that's crazy! just added you to my "on the daily" list of fave blogs :)
that really puts it all in perspective! On the bright side, some of the money they're spending is funded by people who use tanning beds haha.

craziness....but such great words, as always.

I think the government looks at us Americans as money trees. So for the government, these trees do exist. I really can't talk about this without getting upset. GREAT post. I hope a billion people read this and it opens up their eyes!!! Thanks for this Carissa, you rock!
Aw man, so scary wow. Stupid money. We need it to survive but it is surely the devil :) xo
Holy Cow! What a terrifying speed in which we get even more in debt. Funny how everyone says you should work hard to pay off debt, but our own gov is so quick to get more!
holy cow!
what a scary thought???

Nice to meet you and your blog. from Friday Follow.
wow that definitely puts things in perspective!
So freakin frustrating the money that just flies away...
Okay, dorky teacher here now-I tell my kids that all the time with numbers. If you say 20...that means nothing until you attach it to something like that is the average amount of time a cat sleeps. I want to be a cat some days!
Okay, just some random facts. Let me know if you want more :)
oh my goodness this post is awesome!
puts things into perspective!
so crazy! and kind of scary too!

Carissa-
You are one of the most genuine and insightful bloggers I've come across. Your site makes me happy when I get to read it. And these statistics, they're mind boggling. I wish we the little folk could solve all our government's problems now.
