baffled by billions.

in light of our government's over zealous passion to spend massive amounts of money, i thought it time to familiarize myself with just how massive the money is.  trillions? billions? millions? billions of trillions?  or is it trillions of billions? ... all of which will never wind up in my bank account and therefore i haven't the slightest understanding of just how humongous it all is.  these calculations are approximate, but i hope this puts things into perspective: (thanks to kelly's aunt judy for sending this!)

a billion seconds ago it was 1959.

a billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

a billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the stone age.

a billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

a billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

this doesn't even begin to touch on how much a trillion is.  phew.

image found here.
may we all be reminded that these don't really exist.

Great post. And your right, money does not grow on trees. Trillions? Makes me sick thinking about it.

I am amazed at how many people lives their lives like they have a money tree thriving in their back yard! And I don't think I need to even get started on the whole government/money/healthcare stuff!

Wow, I love this. It makes me so sad that our goverment is spending that much money when we can't even pay for it. Eventually they are going to run out of other peoples money, and then what? I think I will post a link to this on my fb.

this totally puts things in perspective for me. i agree, a lot of the time i read the news and see just a number. perhaps i don't look into it further because it is so disheartening to think about it.

Holy Cow! What a terrifying speed in which we get even more in debt. Funny how everyone says you should work hard to pay off debt, but our own gov is so quick to get more!

So freakin frustrating the money that just flies away...
Okay, dorky teacher here now-I tell my kids that all the time with numbers. If you say 20...that means nothing until you attach it to something like that is the average amount of time a cat sleeps. I want to be a cat some days!
Okay, just some random facts. Let me know if you want more :)

Browsing some more of your blog, so nice to find another mom with a similar situation as mine! I'm younger, my daughter Lily will be 1 this April and I am expecting a son in early June! Happy late birthday to your son and sending prayers that the remainder of your pregnancy goes well!

You are one of the most genuine and insightful bloggers I've come across. Your site makes me happy when I get to read it. And these statistics, they're mind boggling. I wish we the little folk could solve all our government's problems now.
