whites, lights, darks. this is something i just learned. for the longest time, cold water has been my best friend. especially thanks to the help of tide coldwater. coldwater at my house has meant that everything (whites, lights, darks) goes in one load. hey, it saves time and money.
now before my friends start freaking out (they are letting me borrow their maternity clothes), i promise, i haven't ruined your clothes (yet, at least... ha ha... just kidding).
the other day, the hubs discovered my cold, one load laundry method and about freaked. he couldn't believe that i'd never been sorting.
i guess it explains why our whites turn, um... well, green.
i blame it on my ocd mom... who did everything her self out of fear that anyone else would mess it up. she never allowed us to set one foot in the laundry room. it was her domain. her throne. i can't complain. what kid wants to do laundry?! (my kids will not be blessed with the same fate.) so, needless to say, i have just never known how to do it.
until now. now i'm going to have to start sorting. my secret has been let out. the hubs has enlightened me. there's no turning back... i must progress.
i must begin to sort my laundry.
how do you do laundry? Pin It

Girly we are sooo much alike! I have to let the hubs read this post! Growing up my MI-MI wouldn't let me do laundry either, like I complained or anything LOL....I never knew how....sooo I was like you cold water was my BFF and I thought nothing will fade nothing will shrink in cold water soooo I put EVERYTHING in like one or two loads....UNTIL the hubs white Ralph Lauren Shirt BRAND NEW BTW turned pink LOL....
After that my secret was let out and um he does all our laundry....he sorts it and all....won't let me do it....It's really funny!
So my friend you are not alone on this one....My name is Summer and I am not Mrs. Cleaver either....LOL
xoxo
Summer :0)
um yeah. i totally love cold and def do not sort laundry. brad hates it. but i also hate it when brad washes towels with anything other than towels...even more so if my undies are involved. :)
You just made me laugh out loud that you didn't know this! makes me love you even more =)
It actually depends on our mood - sometimes we sort and other times we don't (when we are being lazy or tired.. ha ha) I have tried to do better about sorting .. *trying* ;-)
I'm still making rounds from Friday Follow! I'm your newest follower. :)
http://sevinfamily.blogspot.com
Too funny! My mom was the complete opposite of yours...she just threw everything together and it drove me crazy! So now I am a little OCD about my laundry! We do colors, whites, and jeans all in seperate loads. Plus I also do seperate loads for each of my boys. And all the kitchen/messy stuff gets washed by itself in hot water!
I do sort! Just the colors and whites!! I don't do seperate loads for jeans/darks stuff like that.
I do lose alot of socks! I hang up alot of shirts/jeans so they don't shrink!
You're so funny! We would be great together at this! Had so much fun last night and a lot of GREAT laughs! Lol!
AH... I hate laundry. My mom did the exact same thing...It's like we are just suppose to know the rules of laundry? Haha :)
i don't sort either, well if I'm feeling Mrs. Cleaver-ish I will throw in a load of whites...so far no problems
my problem is shrinking things in the dryer...I had a mom that didn't make me do laundry so I can blame her j/k
I am laughing so hard, Mrs. Cleaver! You're a hoot. I do sort my laundry, but I tend to put darks and lights together to cut down on the loads. Buy a box of color catchers and toss one in with your mixed loads. They are the best things ever!
That is funny! I have to admit that I fall into the same category as your mother, I think. I am terribly OCD and refuse to let anyone else touch things for fear of a mishap. So I sort to an extreme and do two million small loads. And you'll soon find as a mom to a baby girl that pink will earn it's own load b/c there will be tons of it! =)
HAHA, I do the same thing! I put a white sweater in the "out" bag and sent it to my mom because it was looking.... old. Next time I see her she's wearing the sweater and it looks brand new! I ask her what she did and she said she washed it and used a sweater fuzzer and then yelled at me for washing it with all my other colors and other fuzzy sweaters. My bad! I took the sweater back :)
lol although i did know how to sort, my husband claims that he has taught me how to "do the laundry". I still wash all the girls clothes mixed though. :) fun post!
I think everyone can relate to this one Carissa;)
I recently washed my son's blankie with darks and it came out blue:( I was so sad!
Hope you have a wonderful day~
Hello, I saw your comment on "House of Bowling" and came to check you out. I will be back!
My Mom always did the wash growing up, so I never learned how to sort laundry until my Hubby and I got married. Believe it or not, I learned by reading the care tag labels on the clothes! Now I'm an old pro. I'm slightly ocd in that I NEVER wash underwear with towels, even if it's hot water. :P
Oh my gosh! I can't believe you never sort! Haha, that is crazy. I actually do a lot of loads... we don't have a fancy washer so I like to split things up. I do whites, lights, darks that need to hang dry, darks that can dry in the dryer, and towels/rags. Sometimes if the loads get to big I will split the lights also... Wow that makes me sound a little OCD! Haha! Thanks for the comments on my blog! I always love reading them :)
Hi Carissa,
I know you're a commenter on "How Sweet it Is", and I thought I'd come drop by and visit you today! What a fun blog! I'm definitely a sorter, and girl, you keep your clothes so much longer when you sort! = saving money (except when you're me, you get tired of your old clothes before they wear out, so you buy new ones anyway :-)) I actually have three small hampers in our closet instead of one: 1 for lights, 1 for darks, and 1 for delicates/special needs. Then in my laundry room I have a three division hamper that I fill one part with sheets, one with towels, and one w/ household etc. Wow, I guess that list makes ME ocd, huh? :-) - Well, it was nice to meet you! Come visit me over at Windy Poplars sometime...we're in the midst of a week of blessing our husbands at the moment. Never too late to join in! Have a great day, ~Kristin http://windy-poplars.blogspot.com
first of all I have to say carissa that I am trying to not have a panic attack over this (not bc of my maternity clothes either!) I am just a paniced over the countless loads of laundry you have washed without sorting. I mean I am really bothered! Maybe you shouldn't tell OCD ppl like me stories like this! I wonder what your mom is thinking after this post? I want to know I am not alone in my panic!
also I do not know who mrs cleaver is so I totally don't get that... ; )
oh if you wanna know my method... whites, darks, towels, delicates...those are my categories....sheets and bedding either end up in a seperate wash or they fall in with the whites or darks if there is room. I wash towels and sheets (if by themselves) in hot water cuz it kills the dust mites...
thank you so much for becoming a follower of my blog! you are the sweetest. unfortunately i don't know that i'll be much help here... i have been known to go out and buy new underwear as a means of avoiding washing what i've already worn! embarrassing but true... laundry is just no fun.
Oh funny.
We have a few files:
delicates (meaning my underwear and the boys football jerseys...how's that for random)
whites
dress pants
dress shirts
reds
dark jeans/pants
darks
sheets
towels
I always say I am lucky I only ever had boys or I'd have to add a "pinks" load to that mix ;)
Hilarious. Because I am the exact same way! And my husband noticed and got on to me as well. Haha. What do they know about anything, anyways?! MEN! I wash everything together in one load, cold/cold. It works! None of our clothes are ever messed up (for the most part) Although I do LOVE folding them! Laundry is my favorite chore. It beats doing the dishes or mopping, sweeping, making the bed ANYDAY of the week!
Haha I do the same thing! I even washed my towels with my clothes once, and then I got towel fuzzies on everything--not good.
I turned my dads undies pink one time and never made the mistake of forgetting to sort again, lol!
I have done that many a times. I got a basket that makes it so much easier now though and it has 3 sections so I do lights, darks, and towels. I always do everything on cold though no matter what.
Baaaahahaha! Girl you crack me up! I wash most of our laundry in cold water (except the boy's really dirty things ), but I always sort! Man it would be nice though if you really could just throw it all in together and not worry about turning your whites a different color! Laundry would get done faster that way!
I am really OCD when it comes to select my laundry. I am really picky and even though I have a housekeeper, I don't let her do my laundry. I rather do it myself ; )
oh goodness that is TOO funny!
i can't believe you just discovered this out! i guess when it comes to laundry i can be particular {which is like the only time in my life that i am!} because i've been doing myself for quite some time.. but there was that one time when gum was in my pants pocket... didn't turn out to well!
This is hilarious! I love learning things from the hubs:) Mine has taught me to thread my sewing machine!!!
I do normally sort my laundry, esp whites because I want them to be, well, white. However, if I didn't own so many clothes, I can't say that I would actually worry about sorting. It seems like a waste to not pack in a full load, ya know?
P.S. One time when I was younger, I washed a load of all the fella's khakis. Come to find, someone left a red and blue crayon in their pocket!!! Ruined the entire load. What make is bad is that I have a big family so that was 5 different dude's pants. What makes it even worse is that we had a funeral the very next morning:\ Oops...
So, I guess my big mistake is that i NEVER check pockets and prob never will:) I suppose I don't always learn my lesson.
girl you crack me up!!! I always love reading your blog!! I used to do my laundry all wrong!! Then after messing expensive clothes up i learned my lesson!! Now im ocd with laundry and house cleaning.ever since i had the girls, i have gotten this way!ha...I used to never clean my house and do the dished laundry every day.....now I DO!! hah..........Have a great day girl!!!!
I have a 3 section sorter in my laundry room. One for white, darks and kids clothes. I dont like to wash the boys clothes with.. well jons clothes. lol. He gets really dirty sometimes in contruction so I like to keep him seperate. Plus I also wash all sheet and towels seperate from our clothes, they require bleach.
I am def. a sorter and I won't let kev do the laundry! Prob. a bit OCD myself. I will def. let him help me sort and put it away!
I didnt learn how to do laundry til I went to college! And I never sort. The only things i'll put in a different pile is Rickey's dress shirts.
Cold water and one load is the only way to go when you're washing for 6!
I think it just depends on the mood Im in. Most of the time Im a sorter but if there's something I have to have clean I will put whatever in the load because I always feel wasteful if I do a small load. But Im with you on the coldwater, I use it on almost every load, except for towels, I have to use hot for them because I feel like it kills germs ha!
How do I do laundry? I train my kids to do it. :)
Seriously ... I do my own laundry and "household laundry" like towels and such. And, I do the little ones' laundry.
My kids all start doing their own laundry at about the age of 12. I teach them how to sort. I show them how to sort. I encourage them to sort. If they choose not to sort, and if their whites turn green, then they will either live with green whites, or they will purchase their own whites. It's all about natural consequences.
I'm still training my husband (after 28 years). He tried to help me out a couple of weeks ago. I was out of town, and he spilled something on my brand new Valentines Tablecloth. He thought he would "help" by washing it right away. He forgot to read the directions on the tag, and just threw it in warm water, and then dried it on high. Yep ... nice new tablecloth doesn't fit the table anymore.
How did I respond? I laughed ... and went out and bought myself a couple new tablecloths.
BTW ... with a dozen children, we have always trained up our children to do household chores. Now that 6 of them are young adults, they THANK ME for training them in how to run a household. They are shocked by all that their peers don't know how to do.
:) :) :)
haha! I never sort my clothes...unless I want to bleach a load of whites. I am just lazy when it comes to that...just throw it all in and add detergent and we are good to go:-)
You are too funny! I don't know who is mrs. cleaver these days! I'll be honest someone told me before I got married not to start something I did not want to do throughout the marriage. My husband does the luandry! I'm serious! He doesn't like the way I fold his clothes, so now he does it! haha
Huh. I had no idea washing in cold water had anything to do with sorting or not sorting. Not that this new wealth of information will make me a better launderer, but good to know just in case I try to improve upon my skills.
I do sort, though - lights and darks. Sometimes there's a question as to whether something is "light" or "colored." If it's colored, it goes with the darks, unless the dark load is too full, then it goes with the lights.
Laundry is not my favorite.
I do like to fold, though.
:-)
Love doing laundry! Im a big dork...and big sorter!
I'm the same as you! Always use cold and throw everything in- haven't had a problem yet =) Sorting takes too much time and effort haha
lol, oh you got off lucky. My mom started making us do our own laundry as soon as we could figure it out. Infact, sometimes she'd even have us do hers and my dad's laundry as part of our chores. She also made us sort everything, and taught us all the ins and outs. Unfortunately, my baby sister did not have this chore. She was the baby after all. And it was just a couple months ago I noticed my sis(who is married with 2 kids) wearing a pink shirt that used to be white. She apparently never saw the point in seperating clothes...until now.
Ok I am definitely NOT Mrs. Cleaver but I am pretty anal about the laundry. I do it all and yes I seperate it all too.. I wash all whites together, all colors together and alot of times I will do my towels seperate as well. If it is a nice piece of clothing, I will wash it seperately by itself and then hang to dry.. I have a whole post on laundry that I still have not finished, if I ever get it finished, I will let you know.. its mostly about stain removal though... yeah, I think I am a little ocd about this.. everyone knows NOT to touch the laundry..hehe!
haha i use to be the same way!! darn our mothers for always doing the laundry ;)
have a great rest of the week!!
Ok so when I have NEW clothes I take such good care of them but after a few months, I am JUST LIKE you. I just throw it all in there. Minus a few whites I like to keep white. Laundry is such a bore. Ughhh :)
You will probably get tons of comments different from mine... but what I do is do a load of laundry every night- with everything we've worn that day. Usually 3 or 4 towels, 2 pair of jeans, 2 shirts, 2 sets of little girls' clothes, and undies, socks, etc... It is not that big of a load, and everything is so much fresher because it doesn't sit in a hamper for days! :)
I used to sort everything out, and do tons of laundry on Saturdays, then leave it in the baskets all week. I HATE putting up laundry!! But now- I just put it up before I go to bed and there is never a big pile-up! So nice!!
Oh... I forgot... You can't steal Madox for a boy if you have one in the future! It's not a shade of green! Hahaha! But I agree it is a precious cute name! I totally giggled at the post with the Kelly/Hunter/Sage thing. Too cute!
Really?
Hahaha-oh no, I'm one of those OCD mom's but now I know to let my kids do the laundry!
My husband has made me that way because too many of my clothes have been ruined by his one load wonders.
I definitely sort! Of course!
But the kids...ONE LOAD, now hers and his together too!
it depends on my mood. USUALLY. towels and jeans get washed together. then all the other stuff. i'm a white and color mixer. and try to avoid buying white altogether actually. sometimes i'm way lazy and throw it all in together. and figure...until my maid shows up then this is how it will be done! :0)
i admit, i'm pretty lazy with my sorting too! haha you're a hilarious writer! :)
Well I just laughed out loud! (I've found that your blog and comments on my own blog tend to do that quite often...appreciate that greatly!) :D But...I didn't laugh out loud at the fact that you don't sort your laundry (until now), but at the fact that your momma never let you do those things. MINE EITHER. I blame things on her b/c of that all the time (she knows it's true...so it's okay). Cooking is the biggie for me. I'm like you though..determined not to be that way. I am determined to fight every control freak ounce of me. (Boo laundry...sorting or no sorting. It's no fun. Period.)
CARISSA! i can't say i'm not surprised after how you load the dishwasher...hahaha! just kidding! you know how i feel about this...sorting is the only way to do laundry!!
i said i was only kidding!
OH HEAVENS - you just got 55 comments about laundry... I am totally impressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I sort -but your hubs and I are from the same family, so I'm guessing you knew that already.
It's great to meet someone that has the same hair situation as me! I love to change it up (especially since I work with really trendy people!) I spent some time today looking through your previous posts and look forward to catching up! You have an adorable family!
Husband does the laundry (Thank God!) But I do from time to time... have not had many problems... yet!
You are so funny! This is exactly why I love reading your posts :-)
Oh dear I don't sort my colours...
Glad I found your blog, LOVE IT! And laundry, yes I'm so glad 1) my hubby doesn't try to do it and 2) He wears t shirts and jeans to work. makes it soooo easy :-)
I just started reading your blog and you are so hilarious! I'm glad to see a woman with a sense of humor AND faith blogging away!
I sort the laundry (just colors and white) and wash everything in cold, too. Although, my husband gets on me about not washing white in warm, but it costs more! I'm with ya there!
haha it's definitely an acquired skill!
Oh my word that is so funny! You'll get it girl, you'll be Mrs. Cleaver before you know it!
WOW! I have been enlightened! I NEVER knew you could throw everything into cold water! I think I'm going to go the opposite and try NO SORTING! I feel deprived that the possiblity even exsisted! LOL!
