u.p.s (united profit service) & u.s.p.s. (united states postal [dis]service)

i've been doing some serious selling on ebay...  in honor of spring and my ravenous desire to nest, we are purging our house.   the other day i had 10 packages to mail so i headed to the post office.  keeping all those packages straight is a whole 'nother story... making sure that the right person received the right item at the right address was almost too much for this preggers to manage, because i'm undoubtedly losing several hundred brain cells every minute second.   hopefully everything ends up at the right spot and i only get positive feedback.

nevertheless,  i arrive at the usps building at 4:32 pm with all of my packages.  the doors are locked.  they are closed.  what?!  who closes at 4:30?  well, our going bankrupt postal service does.  which is why they are going bankrupt.  although, they have to close early to keep from going bankrupt even worse. - hmm.  i was irritated.  i wanted to get these things mailed before the weekend.  i also thought about how inefficient our government is and how everything they are in charge of is going bankrupt.  even our country.  hello.  and now they want to run our healthcare.   i digress.  sorry, different post for a different time.

anyhow,  off i went thinking, "i'll show them."  and i arrived at the house of the brown trucks and uniforms...  and ended paying three times as much to mail the packages.  it was as if the usps was saying "ha, we'll show her."  i left, frustrated, realizing that our profits were dwindling.  i cried.  because i'm hormonal and felt like the world was going to end and that we were going to go bankrupt.  i'm sure these emotions were compounded by the fact that i was driving a car without air conditioning on an 85 degree day (i know 85 doesn't sound that bad... but when you're carrying another human being inside of you it adds like at least 10 degrees to the current temp).

let me mention this... ups was going to charge me $65 to send a package to canada.  the package didn't even weigh one pound.  today i went back to usps (darn government.  they gave me no choice since they're cheaper.)  and mailed that very package for $2.

i'll be glad when we're finished with our ebay craze.

Last summer I was pregnant and didn't have air conditioning in my car either...in Mississippi. :/ So I totally feel your pain!!! It actually still isn't fixed because we decided to "wait until it got hot again" and hope we had the money. Well, it's hot again and it still isn't fixed. :) Maybe one day!

LeAnna said...

Ahhhh! I feel your pain! Our post office closes at 4:30, too, and I couldn't believe it! Apparently post offices can close whenever they want to. Because another one in town stays open 'till 5. Whateva. Selling on ebay can be so worth it, and yet soooo much work. I go through ebay phases from time to time. And then you get people who obviously paid too much for their purchase because they had the bidding fever, and then gripe and say what you sold them wasn't accurately described (whateva) and that they want ALL of their money back. You then have to tell them they are full of bologna and that you weren't born yesterday. Hmph! Vent over. You should relax and do nothing today, that's my suggestion. ;)

Oh my butterflies they were gonna charge $65.00 for a package under a lb to be sent to Canada! That is um crazy! Our post office close to our house is closing for good and right now they are in transission of it and close at like 4:00.....so crazy! That stinks you had to lug all that to the door to find out they were um closed!

Sorry it was such a crummy event! I am glad that you are purging some stuff and I hope you make lots of mula from E-Bay! Everything will be fine! It seems like we worry about things and then God always comes through for us!

See one day you could be worrying about your labor/delivery bill and the next you find out hmmmm my insurance will cover most of it! So I will keep you in my prayers and hang in there sweet girl....

xoxo

Our small town post office isn't even open on Saturday and they close at 1:00.

Awwww Carissa! I'm so sorry you had to deal with all that! Stinkin' post office. Stinkin' heat. Stinkin' hormones! :)

I'm glad you were able to get them all mailed off, even if it did take so much effort.

Our post office always has lines out the door and for some reason only have one or two people working and a bunch of other people who seem to just be walking around...

Sending you some sweetness today!

xoxo,
Bonnie

I'm so sorry...and in the heat! I can never get to the post office and that is frustrating. Remember when mail used to be fun?

Katie said...

oh no! I had to laugh, but then felt so bad for laughing! You are so right! We can't do anything but have to go where it's the cheapest and then on principle we leave mad about it. I feel your frustration!

Nancy said...

i am so with you.. i dread going to the post office. I have to do it today. I keep procrastinating; but today is the day. Going to get it done! i will be thinking of you today. :)

BOOOO to them! :( I cannot wait to read "your post for another day" and agree with you wholeheartedly on every point you make (:

The post office is for sure exhibit A on why the gov't should not be allowed to run ANYTHING! You have to fill out papers to be able to fill out papers for cryin' out loud!!
I'm sure your smiling face and too cute son brought a little happiness to their otherwise gov't filled blahness, though!

Jill said...

I can't believe the cost is so different! That is insane. I'm sorry your hormones were out of whack - I can't imagine being preggers!

Kelli @ RTSM said...

I hate to mail stuff for all those reasons! I actually started paying all my bills online so I didn't have to go to our local post office because the lady was so rude and their hours were ridiculous! They close at 4:30, plus they close from 12-1 for lunch and there are no stamp machines so you have to go during their business hours! CRAZY!

Linds said...

ok, you had me rolling. SO sorry you didn't have AC in your car. I would have stayed home and brought on the negative feedback... no way I'd have gone out without AC when I was preggo! Totally am with you on the whole government thing! I have always told my husband that the government hires the worst of the worst. They should definitely wear shirts that say "I'm with stupid" pointing at their coworkers in the booth next to them. Ha!

Mc Allen said...

awwwws, I'm sorry sweet girl! I'm w/ you, it's a racket! I'm so glad you gt it all sent out ! What name are you selling under? I'm a buyer on ebay lol! ;) I hope you had a fabulous weekend after that! xoxo LA

Holy Cow! I don't know what to say.. over $60 to mail something?? INSANE!

Anne said...

Oh goodness - I understand your frustrations. All of them, with the USPS the UPS and the government. Every day I am thankful that my hope is not in our government.

Hope all the cleaning and organizing is going well. I wish I had the desire to do those things. Instead I just want to be outside all the time.

Trina said...

$65 really?! That is just pure nonsense.

Crazy Shenanigans said...

65 bucks! That's insane! The post office has really been on my nerves lately! I went in there to get some stamps out of the machine and they've taken all of them out around here. So now if you just wants stamps you have to stand in line. If they have already closed then sorry charlie, you're out of luck!

MollyinMinn said...

Ah yes, I too used to be a crazed ebay seller. But the shipping logistics were also enough to put me over the edge. And that is why now, I am mostly a Craigslist girl.

All the same, you got a great post out of it!

Cole said...

from $65 to @2! That is quite a gap. Around where I live we have a bunch of small family owned mail shops where people can send things off. They are usually pretty cheap. And I know how you feel on the pregnancy-heat don't mix thing. I believe it was 116 degrees out the day my first song was born. Gotta love AZ. :) Just always carry with you a big thermos of ice water or ice something to help cool you down.

Stephanie said...

Wow! $65! That is crazy... I hate it when we don't have a choice we like! Stupid monopolies :)

Stephanie said...

And yes, you can live vicariously through my beach goings :)

Lauren said...

that's crazy!!! i got so mad last week when I tried to drop my sewing machine off for a tune up. The place is 30 minutes from my house and I pulled up at 2:15pm on WEDNESDAY to read that they close at 1:30pm on Wednesdays only ... every other day is 5pm. I cried too.

brookesbabble said...

AH... this post kind of stresses me out as well. I get anxious thinking about our bankrupt government. Yikes!! At least you have non wacky people buying your things off ebay... Anytime I have ever tried I always get the scam people hah! Hope you have a good tuesday!! Good luck today if you are mailing anything :)

oh and thank you for your sweet comment yesterday :) you're comments always make my day!

Wow, that is crazy expensive! The other day I had to review a court hearing for a class I am taking so I got a sitter, headed to the courthouse and low and behold they had a furlow day that day. A waste of a day for me! Thanks to our goverment our courts are too broke to stay open on a regular schedule. What's next?

Kendra said...

That's nuts.!!! I hate mailing stuff. So light yet so expensive.! My mom works for USPS, in the back dealing with no people, (so dont hate on her) but she has an in at the post office for me (: I jsut give her my shizz and she gets it mailed for me. I know my post office doesn't close till 5 I think..idk.

Sarah Ann said...

No fun. The post office is weird, and I never like it. I love UPS and hate their prices.
I'm so sorry you're emotional. I can't wait to be preggo, but I know that if I'm crazy emotional now, Billy's going to want me placed in a padded room with chocolate for nine whole months. :)

Design Apprentice said...

Carissa,
I hate mailing things too, it's such a hassle. And post offices can be slower than molasses. This government of ours is completely bottoms up and it scares me. I think the only thing we can do is be responsible for ourselves I suppose. You're smart and savvy, I think I'd prefer you running the country.

Domesticated-Bliss said...

poor preggo :) sorry about the rough day! it sucks to see your money go down the tubes when you're supposed to be making money!

Meg Fletcher said...

They should give you a discount because you are pregnant and cute!

Jewls said...

Ugh and doesn't it just enrage you when you have to pay for shipping when you buy something online? Like you buy a $5 item and then pay $5 shipping...RIDICULOUS!

Kristi said...

Oh man, it's like you are writing down everything that I'm thinking about our government, I hear ya sister! In so many ways. And you had to deal with all of this with no air conditioner and you are pregnant! You poor thing, I'm not pregnant and I think I would have cried too!!

Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog, you really are such a great person!! I'll be waiting for your acceptance speech anytime! I can't wait to read it!

At least our Post Office has a section open all the time that you can go in and measure, approx weight, and send packages etc. That does help. Dosen't eveyone hate being ripped off!?

That is crazy!! You're pretty amazing for organizing all that. I would have been a confused mess without being pregnant!

Annoying! I melted last summer when I was pregnant with J, due in August.

I do have to give USPS some credit though (my FIL is a letter carrier), but they are not run by the government anymore. They are a separate entity.

Mailing things drives me crazy, too. Our local post office closes at 3:00 every day.

Hang in there ... baby is on the way ... your emotions will settle down a bit (but not too much, because having 2 kids will throw you for a loop for awhile).

Hope your day is BLESSED!!!

Laurel :)

Jocelyn said...

Wow! What a difference in prices...that is outrageous!!! Hooray for ebay selling though:-) That is awesome! I have been cleaning too, but just sending it all to goodwill.

Cassie said...

sooooo true, it cost wayyy too much to send stuff off!!

hope you have a great day! :))

Natalie said...

oh my goodness girl--you have GOT to jump on the craigslist bandwagon!! Then you can get rid of all that stuff without having to ship it anywhere! Sorry about your bad experience :(

chelsea rebecca said...

OH GOODNESS! i can so relate! i hate hate my post office. its so unofficial and sloppy {its the one on my college campus} and i always feel like it will never make it!
goodness i wish sending packages was easier. like you just used two stamps instead of one or something! haha.
congrats on all the ebay sells though!!

Becca said...

$65???!!!! That is absolutely nuts!!!!

Our post office closes not only at 4pm every day but they also close for 2 hours during lunch time. My hubby was pissed when he spent his lunchbreak trying to get rid of a package only to find their doors locked! Seriously?

You better get that AC fixed girl! It's only like 75 here today and I was blasting that thing on full earlier! And I'm not even pregnant!!

Anna Liesemeyer said...

argh!! I couldn't agree with you more!! I started shipping from home because I didn't want to go to the post office anymore with etsy orders:)
So sorry you had to do all that pregnant!!

Oh no...I would have cried too! :) Hope you still make a good profit! We're selling hubby's textbooks on Amazon, and I found out the hard way that the USPS is so much cheaper too. Seriously....the shipping hastle is what keeps me from selling more stuff online. Hope tomorrow goes better for you! :)

kim said...

sorry that you trip went so badly, don't blame all us post office people, lol
and for the record usps isn't run by the government anymore :)
but they are still doing badly, and I'm with you on the healthcare thing
hope that everything was sent to the right place and that you bumped up your feedback score!

all i can say is: i really dislike the post office...boooo on the post office!!! everytime i go hayden messes something up. why would they put the boxes and such so low for him to touch??

Sabrina said...

Oh girl. That stinks so bad that the post office was closed. I didn't know they were closing at 4:30 nowadays either.
I hope your profits weren't affected too much by the boys in brown (who chose that awful color anyway???). Yay for selling stuff though and good for you for purging. It can be difficult to find the energy to do that so I'm VERY impressed that you did it preggo and somewhat ashamed at myself since I don't have any valid excuse to speak of. LOL!
If you ever need help I'm off on Fridays and more than willing to chauffeur you and that sweet baby boy around. You can enjoy the a/c and you won't have to worry about driving ;-).

I was so having one of those days too. I think I broke down and cried a couple of times and I'm not even pregnant. I would so love to have my pre-baby(s) brain, mood and while we're at it, body back!!! Hope tomorrow is better for ya!!!

That is so aggravating!!!! I am forever getting ill with our post office, too--- i hate going there and put it off until I absolutely HAVE to go!

amanda said...

i've never sold on ebay. but usually do on craigslist. which then doesn't involve the shipping for me. i just meet them somewhere i'm going or they come to me. :0) means more profit. i need to purge our house. like five years ago!!

and my sister had a party for me last night. i will add your oil to her party to help her sales out. she is closing it at the end of this week so you should have it by the end of next week hopefully!! :0) thanks so much!

Abigail Kraft said...

lol. I thought it was pretty normal for the post office to close at 4:30....ours does! But then again, our post office is in our teeny tiny town, so I guess it makes sense. :P

Oh my word....shipping fees are so frustrating! And I hate it when they won't give you the type of shipping that you want, so it ends up being like way more expensive. Lame.
