miscellany monday

grab the button, write random, and link up!

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1. just call me june.
as in cleaver.  i have some helpful household tips to pass along, all thanks to redbook magazine, which i get every month with my mom's name on it, sent to my address.  she nor i have ever signed up for it, it just all of a sudden began appearing...  either it's because we're identity theft victims, redbook is really nice, or they're going to send us a bill in a few years saying we owe $5,000.  i am just hoping they're nice.  on to the tips...

  • milk will keep in your fridge one week past the sell by date.
  • eggs stay fresh for three to five weeks after purchase.  keep the carton in the body of the fridge rather than the door to preserve them.
  • bananas can be stored in the fridge for up to five days.  their skins will brown, but the fruit will remain fresh.
  • bread should be stored on the counter (or the pantry - who wants bread cluttering their counters?!) for up to a week.  storing bread in the fridge causes it to become stale faster.
  • steaks and ground beef that have turned brown but have been refrigerated for less than five days are safe to eat and just as tasty.

2. pure sweetness.
hunter is learning how to be a sweet brother.  we're not to total sweetness quite yet... sage's eyeballs are mighty appealing to poke and her pacifier is so tempting to taste.  but every now and then hunter goes a mile for his sister.  the other day she was screaming bloody murder as i was bathing her (this has become commonplace), hunter came in to check on us and then quickly left.  i didn't blame him.  he then came back to the bathroom with two of sage's stuffed animals and handed them to her for comfort.  awww.  my heart melted.

3. i wouldn't even buy them for a penny.
penny loafers.  do you like them?  i know they're all the rage, but really?  why?  as i continue to pass on all the latest trends i am reminded that i am not cool anymore.  i ain't no spring chicken.  although i do remember saying that i'd never wear cowboy boots with dresses.  and now i love that ensemble.  the same thing will happen with these loafers, i'm sure.  i'll like them in a few years just as they're on their way out.

4.  a good laugh.
i found myself in the single section a few weeks ago during the sunday morning church service.  yikes.  never again.  since i sit by myself during worship (hubby is the worship leader) i can come across as single.  yet, i'm obviously married. but, i guess it's not so obvious to everyone.  so, a young single guy came over, introduced himself and said, "you shouldn't be sitting here all alone."  (note: if you're male and you're reading this, that is so not a good pick-up line.  just saying.)  my response to him: "my husband is coming." i am sure he immediately felt stupid... i got so excited for kelly to come and sit down next to me... i knew the guy would then not only feel stupid but want to crawl into a hole right then and there after realizing he had just hit on the worship leader's wife.  besides, if that guy knew i had a baby two months ago i think he would've thrown up in his mouth.

5. yeah, we'll keep her.

I remember when Alex used to be a sweet potato :) He still can be...but there will never be total sweetness, haha! ;) That Hunter is definitely a sweetheart, that is so precious!

I don't care for the loafers either...but I'm not a trend setter myself :) I think you're adorable and that guy was probably not embarrassed for trying to get your number, he was probably mad he didn't get you sooner ;) you're a hot momma ;)

Sage is a doll...I'm pretty sure I'd keep her too! Happy Monday!

OMGosh Sage is just precious. Those cheeks are irresistible. That is too funny about being hit on. Since I am fairly new around here I didn't know that hubs was a worship leader. How cool.
Thanks for all the helpful tips "June". I need as many kitchen tips as I can get.

So good to hear from you and see pictures of that sweet baby! :) Hope all is well!

Totally LOL'd at #4, I had a guy stalk me at Wal-Mart yesterday, fat, pregnant and all. Gave me the willies! I hunted down my Hubby and said PLEASE stop wandering off! :P

No thanks to the penny loafers. Can't do it. Nope. Won't.

Love those sweet baby cheeks! You look great, love the picture of you two. Presh! Have a great week!

Kelli said...

Thanks for those tips, especially about the meat because I freak out when it turns brown. The sweet Hunter...what a little gentleman. I had to laugh at the man hitting on you at church...too funny. I want to give Sage hugs...she is just adorable.

Ha, that's funny about the singles section at church. My husband is also the Worship Pastor at our church, so I know how you feel!

Angie S said...

Oh my goodness gracious, she is a doll. I could eat her with a spoon!!

I'm not a loafer person either...yuck!

Happy Monday :)

Becca said...

Awe! Hunter is such a sweet, big brother! How can he not be to that precious Sage though!?!

That is too funny about the singles section at church. I am sure he will never approach a woman like that agaiN!

Mandy said...

Love that single story~ I would kill for a few pick up lines... =) And that baby girl is to. die. for. Adorable!

I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE AFTER KELLY TOOK HIS SEAT! ROFL!!!!

Lara said...

Getting hit on during worship?! Check you out, hot mama! Yea, I'm going to have to agree with you on penny loafers. I've just learned to embrace boyfriend jeans, but they scare me. They're so complicated.

Jennifer said...

Great post. First off, love the tips. Good to know about the eggs and the bread. You should be flattered that you were getting hit on. Even thoug the pick-up line really wasn't that great..LOL! And love the pics of Sage. She is getting so big. I have to also tell you, you have great teeth..LOL!

Hannah said...

LOVE the tips--but for me, banana's have to be a little green before I eat 'em. Otherwise they're too mushy. Ick...

And AWWW...oh, goodness. That is so sweet! Hunter is just darling! He actually got her two of her favorite toys? Melt my heart indeedy!

I've never liked penny loafers. I think I've grown up with the idea that they're "granny shoes." I just...well, they're not really my style. That been said, I'm not much of a style guru myself, and fashionista? I don't think so. I'll take jeans and a t-shirt any day.

HAHAHA! Ohmygoodness! He hit on you?! That is too funny! Didn't he know who you were? Oh my...that's hilarious! (although, he must've just thought you were some cute adult--which he'd be right in thinking.) Poor guy. He'll probably avoid you from now on.

Aw! Those pics of Sage are uber cute. We'd take a Sage in a heartbeat (but not from her momma!)

Love the Miscellany, Carissa! <3

Such cute photos as always!

Faith said...

AW!! Thanks for the newest pics of Sage! How adorable is she?!

Penny Loafers = ick.

A single guy actually talked to you? I go to church by myself every week and I've never had anything like that happen to me! I would totally take that as a compliment. But I died laughing reading how you told it!

Rachel said...

Totally agree about penny loafers. I am officially and completely unhip. Unless not liking them counts as a little bit cool.

LOL about the church thing. Those scenarios are funny. When Hannah was a baby, Todd got pulled over in the express lane (carpool lane) of a metered ramp. He was going down it because he had Hannah in the back (legit). Well, the officer didn't see Hannah and thought that Todd was trying to cheat the metered lanes and pulled him over. As Todd waited for him to come up, he turned up the WeeSing tape (yes, back then it was tapes) just a bit more...then rolled down his window. Needless to say, the kind officer blushed a bit and sent Todd on his way.

Love those stories.

You are cute...smile.

Have a great Monday. And those pictures of Sage and you are adorable.

(off to take the bread off my counter)

I am not a fan of penny loafers either. I really can't imagine liking them. And I love the story of the guy hitting on you at church. Props to you for not looking like you just had a baby 2 months ago :)

OMGoodness, so much to comment on! Lovely post!!! Love the dear pix of Sage, so beautiful (I'm glad you are planning on keeping her!)...as far as the pick up guy, LOLLLLLLLLLLL, absolutely LOVE it!!!! Such a sweet boy, Hunter, to bring his little sis stuffed animals, love that!! As far as the age/styles, right?! It just gets better...I'm now the mom who is most often seen in yoga pants and ponytails! And lastly, gotta love those magazine companies when certain details slip through the cracks...like subscriptions sent but never asked for ;)

Sammy said...

Hahah that guy was probably mortified.

Hunter is such a sweet brother, you're so lucky with two wonderful (and adorable) children.

oh, how darling is that baby? i think she will
be as pretty as her sweet mommy.

dear june,

i honestly didn't know any of those interesting
food facts, but since my kids check the dates
on everything and think i'm already trying to
poison them, i'm not sure this will help me.

june cleaver is my absolute favorite of all
the 50's tv moms because of her dry wit. she
may have been wearing a belted dress while
she vacuumed, but her brain was humming
right along, too.

would appreciate your prayers, because my
baby (18) is going to brazil to the mission
field for three months. i am so excited for her
but will miss her soooooo much.

love,
lea

i haven't bought any loafers yet... but you did pick out some mighty cute ones i have to say... however, i hate spending money on trends until i think they will live past "trend" stage... like skinny jeans, they've been around a while...

um, sweet baby girl is SOOOOO darling!

Bernice Wood said...

I am new here! And love it! I am very random by nature so today is a good day to be here, lol!
I love tips from magazines, your little boy sounds like he might have some sweetness in him, I am usually on the ending edge of fashion as well (as opposed to the cutting edge!), poor guy, he probably did want to crawl under the seats, and she IS adorable! LOL! Come visit when you can!

Elizabeth Rose said...

Thanks for the tips! Good to know.

Hunter is such a sweetie pie. My 6 year old brother is just like that--always wanting to help my little sister. So sweet. :)

Penny loafers? Seriously? *ahem* Just another thing to add to my "never-ever-buy-at-all-costs" list. Which also happens to be my "two-years-later-and-I'm-buying-them" list. *wink*

Oh, that's too funny! Your Prince Charming came to rescue you just in time!

Aww, Sage is so beautiful. Lovely, lovely eyes!

Love,
Elizabeth Rose

Maybe next time.

Ohmigosh Carissa. Sage is SO. ADORABLE. Seriously. That first picture I forced my family to look at. Earning a zillion "Awwwwww!!!"s. :D

Lea said...

I didn't get to participate today and I've grieved over it all day. :o) Some days there just aren't enough hours. (I'm sure you know that all too well.) But, I had to stop by and read your entry and as usual, I loved it. Can't believe how Sage has grown. So precious! Have a memory making week!

JillAileenJones said...

Well yeah-I got to join in and I was in a hurry and typed Pathway to Purpose without my name and hit send-so 102 is not me and some other blog and they didn't mean to link up! What a Monday-lol
I don't know why I couldn't link up before there were 96 on there and it said this Linky is now closed. So glad it isn't and I got to get on, even if it is 2x and me not being one of them. Sorry!
It has really been one of those Mondays-so thankful for Tuesdays.
Beautiful pictures of the kiddos by the way-growing by leaps and bounds and just precious.

ahh i hate those shoes too!! your baby is so adorable and you look awesome

Okay 4 is so funny (because of the line) but come on - you must feel like a babe! And your husband must feel like a complete stud!
Unless he was anything like the men that I attract - always at a thrift store and always toothless and smelly. Always.

Hilary Surratt said...

I had so much fun with you today! I can't wait to have some playdates with you when maggie gets here! :) Also, thanks for the bag full of goodies!!!! :)

Shelby Bukhenik said...

June thanks for all the tips! Those are definitely things I have wondered before but completely forgot to research! I also love a subscription you don't have to pay for haha!

Isn't it amazing to see your seemingly selfish one year old care for his/her sibling! It touches my heart every time Emma stops what she is doing to acknowledge Izzies existence! Izzie of course LOVES it! Hunter is such a gentleman already!

I mean I know its a good story to tell, but isn't it also an ego booster. three months after giving birth and you are getting hit on haha!

That Sage is a beautiful baby!!

BARBIE said...

I'd better hurry and get my bread out of the fridge. Learn something new every day. I wouldn't buy the loafers for a penny either. Not my style. Oh and the man trying to hit on you at church, how funny is that. Your Sage is absolutely gorgeous and you my dear are stunning!

amanda said...
