you know this guy...
he's from my neck of the woods back in california, so on our visit, we visited his restaurant, johnny garlic's.
i ordered a butternut squash soup. it was the best soup my tongue had ever laid taste buds on. my grandma got gutsy and asked the waitress for the recipe. i was a bit embarrassed. why in the world would they just give out the recipe?! the waitress came back, recipe in hand. go grannie! hubby reminded me that since guy's recipes are all over foodnetwork.com it's probably not that big of a deal... who knows, this recipe may even be there too. but, i don't want to burst my bubble of exclusiveness. ha. (okay, i just checked... this really is exclusive and cannot be found on the food network.)
this thanksgiving, i was asked to make the sweet potato casserole... well, let me just say that this soup is good enough to replace the good 'ol sweet potatoes with. i plan on making it instead. it's that good. seriously people.
you should know that this is the actual restaurant recipe. meaning, it will feed about 30 - 35 people. so, unless you want to turn your home into a restaurant, cut the recipe down to however many servings your heart so desires. it would've been really nice of me to do that for you, but i don't want to be responsible for ruining your soup because of bad math.
johnny garlic's butternut squash soup
*remember: this recipe is huge and will feed about 30 - 35 people.*
ingredients:
2 cups onion
1/2 cup garlic chopped
35 pounds butternut squash
1T. cayenne
1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
2 oz. olive oil
1 tsp. cloves
1 oz. tabassco
1/2 pound butter
6 qt. chicken stock
1 1/4 gallon cream
directions:
cut the squash in half, drench with olive oil, salt and pepper. roast the squash on a baking sheet at 350 degrees for one hour. remove the skin from the squash, puree it in a food processor and then place it all in a large pot. add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil for 30 minutes. eat and enjoy. it's good to the last bite.
hope each of you and yours has a sweet thanksgiving.

What a fun place to go...we love watching Guy on the Food Network. Your Grandma sounds awesome:-) Have a great Thanksgiving!
I guess we have not because we ask not, right?!
Sweeet potatoes are my all time fave, so if you say this is that good, I will have to try it.
And who doesn't love Guy Fieri anyway?!
yummy! I hope I can one day be as balsy as your grandma!
Yummo! (to use another Food Network saying) That soup sounds fabulous. And, if my family had been coming over the recipe would have almost been the perfect size. ha ha ha
Have a lovely Thanksgiving, my beautiful friend!
You rock, I've been wanting to try butternut or carrot soup. I think I shall deviate my own recipe from this, and use both. Mmm, good! Now, if I can just think of what to replace the cream with (boo, I know, but I have to go non dairy while nursing) hmm, the possibilities!
This looks wonderful. Can't wait to try it! Thanks for sharing!! Now let's hope I won't mess it up with my own math. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your adorable fam!
butternut squash is the BEST. I hope to make this one day. :) Thank you!
i find it hilarious that it calls for 35 pounds of butternut squash. can you even imagine?! happy thanksgiving! :)
Ditto what Jessica said...that is like a pound of squash per person, ha ha! I would love to try this but just scale it down a bit. Hmmm. Way to go Grannie for asking for the recipe too, ha ha!!
Ooooh sounds yummy! Glad you guys had fun and were able to go there:-)
Now, how cool is this? Guess Grannie proved that it never hurts to ask. :o)
A happy, happy Thanksgiving to you and your precious family!
woohoo go grannie!

Please visit me again so that we can catch up :D
Sounds wonderful....Happy Thanksgiving to you...I have missed you...
I read how you went shopping last night. I bet your bed felt great! Chloe and I went to Target and Kohls today and found nothing...except crazy, crazy, crazy lines. I did spend $13. :)
It's so hard to NOT get sucked into the consumerism of Christmas. And it's even harder to keep the kids from getting pulled into it. It's just everywhere.
I think I'm going to order online again this year. I'm much more calculated about purchases and tend to spend less and get what we really want.
Love the song. Now I'm singing it as well.
You are a blessing. I'm thankful for our friendship.

I love him. I didn't know he actually had a restaurant. How cool is that! I need to try that soup. It sounds so good on this cold wintery morning. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving girlie.
It sounds so delicious!! If it wasn't so hot, I would give it a shot. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
OMGosh, we love this guy!! Mmm, the soup sounds delish!
