miscellany monday

grab the button, write random, and link-up below.

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1. hey grandma,
when you call my cell phone and i don’t answer, it doesn’t mean i am not home.  i take my cell phone with me everywhere.  that’s the beauty of it.  so next time you leave me a message you don’t have to say “well, i guess you’re not home right now since you aren’t answering.”  : )  i might miss the good laugh, though.  you are so cute.

2. mommy and me.
it’s really fun to see your own mannerisms coming out of the little people that live with you…

i usually am a big wide open smiler.  evidently sage is too.  must be a girl thing.

  3. less is more.
am i right or am i right?  except when it comes to groceries and exercise.  oh and diapers and wipes, too.  i have this new less is more mantra and i’m trying to really simplify our lives.  it’s mostly still thoughts floating in my head that i want to bring to fruition.  also, i have had a brilliant thought… the less you go to the store, the less you spend.  i know, i’m genius.  if you’re like me, you go to the store for one or two things and then end up with a whole cart full of things you didn’t know you needed.  and probably don’t need.  this happens especially at target; it’s those darn clearance end-caps i tell you.  but like hubby says, just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean we need it.  and even if it was 50% off, it was still 100% more than we needed to spend.

4.  smile. pass it on.
supposedly this 4th Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year according to some study done somewhere.  the study said that people are lonely after the holiday busyness, they are now receiving their credit card bills from Christmas over spending, and it’s pretty much cold and dreary outside.  so, whatever you do today and wherever you go, have a smile on your face and you might help cheer up the world.  this is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.  -psalm 118:24

: )

5. curious about cleaning.
i'm usually a get it done all at once in four hours kind of cleaning girl.  but, i'm slowly realizing that four hours for cleaning are hard to come by.  i know several ladies that set their timers for thirty minutes a day and clean.  then their house gets cleaned, little by little, all week long.  i'm going to adopt this idea.  how do you clean?

I definitely am guilty of having a cart full when my list is only 10 items long! At one point I had said I would allow myself 3 items that weren't on my list and that was it...it didn't last very long! As for cleaning, I try to focus on one thing a day, that way it doesn't seem like I'm cleaning all day. (Clean/polish the floors downstairs, clean the master bedroom/bathroom etc). Also, I only do laundry with Christian because it's something I CAN do while he's awake and playing:-)

Astro said...

I clean in 5 min intervals..as that it the max amt of time the baby is able to self entertain when she is awake.

I am trying to simplify as well! It's hard to do for some reason, but I know that it will be SO beneficial to my whole family. We're starting the cash only system in February so hopefully that will help us save too!
I LOVE the picture of Sage making the same face you did. SO cute!!! And I cannot believe how big she is getting!
Happy Monday!

I use to do the cleaning in 1 day thing. Threw that out a few years ago. I use Motivational Moms (http://motivatedmoms.com) ...you can download it. It gives you daily checklists. They even have an iPhone app! I LOVE IT!!!!!

LOL at Grandma....that is hilarious!

Lil Sage has a beautiful smile, like Momma!

Have a great day!

I enjoyed your random Monday post. I am THAT grandma...I always leave messages like that! My girls laugh at me...but I always think..."You will be me someday!...just wait!" (:>)

Now that I am retired and have way less energy...I just clean a few things...sit down and read or watch tv! Then after awhile I do more. Great thing is...my hubby is retired too...and he is my helper...and he cleans that way too. It takes two of us to do what one person used to do!

When I go for a few items, I do always find energy to shop for frivolous things at Target and Walmart, and Kohls etc. But then I have to go home and rest Ha! (:>) And those things I thought I needed, or even wanted...don't really bring me any lasting pleasure. I would rather spend time with my kids and grandkids and spend my energy with them!

You are fun. I love the huge smile in that wedding picture...and yes baby is taking after you with that adorable smile!

Have a great Monday!

I clean all week. I also use Motivated Moms. I don't get everything done but at least the big stuff is taken care of! Have a good day!

Great smiles! Definitely like mother, like daughter! :)

Cleaning? A little bit each day - being diligent because it all gets done eventually, just not all at the same time! And our kids have worked with me since little on up (even our almost 2yo) has a few things she helps with. So by the time our big crew is ages 13, 10, 9, 7, 5, 3 and almost 2 - there's a lot of work they do. It's fun to see all those years of job training pay off! :)

Love the pics! You and Sage are just too cute. I clean a little here and there all week long it seems. I like to try to get he bulk of the deep cleaning done on Mondays, and then leave the rest of the week to straightening what the toddler drags out. Seems like if I can at least clean the kitchen every night the rest of the house doesn't seem so bad...

Bonnie said...

I like the idea of dedicating 30 mins a day of real cleaning. I think I may try that.

Gotta love our Grandmas!

Little Miss Emmy Lou said...

I do laundry all day almost every day... changing in throughout the day. AS far as deep cleaning, I usually clean bathrooms and such after the boys are in bed whenever I have the energy (so like once a week?). Yeah it's hard to clean with 2 kids!

Kelli @ RTSM said...

Sage is too cute with that big ole smile:) I have a hard time resisting the clearance stuff at Target too...the endcaps are bad!! I'm usually a clean it all kind of person too...but when I'm too tired to clean that means nothing gets clean! I love the idea of setting a timer, but I think I might hate my timer if I did that:)

i just made a cuff for myself that says smile. i need it as a reminder. getting through january is always work. love your big wide smile. very happy!!

Awwww! How precious is your grandma?! I love it! You and Sage both have beautiful smiles :) Noelle and I have the same smile - my hubby calls it our "orange slice"! Girl, I am all about less is more but, like you, my ideas on how to achieve this are still floating around in my head. It is bound to happen, though - I am on a mission! Let's not talk about Target right now...sore spot this morning! While Noah was at AWANA last night, the rest of the family was just picking up 'a few necessities' at Target - $119 later - really? I think we went in there for paper towels and toothpaste. Ugh! Happy Monday :) SMILE!! xoxo, Kelly

target sucks me in everytime too. darn clearance aisle and great deals. i like what your hubby said...i should remember that.

Emily P. said...

I did clean the house for about 30 minutes each day when I was in my first trimester just because doing it all in one day wasn't an option. But, now that I have more energy I prefer to do it all in one day. Once the baby is born I may have to go back to doing a little each day.

Im trying to add your badge for this to my pages on my blog. For some reason its not working for me. Do you know what I may be doing wrong? Thanks. Also I love your blog and this idea.

Anna Liesemeyer said...

Okay love that idea for the cleaning. I feel like I am picking up toys all day long, but most of my cleaning is done on Fridays,...when I have an extra pep in my step:) Otherwise, my house is neglected until guests come over and I am forced to clean-he he.
Hope you have a fantastic week friend!

i love the 'less is more' mantra - it is one i've, little-by-little, been trying to apply to my life. i was just thinking this morning, that it's been FOREVER since i've been to target. that's probably a good thing, since i'm very bad about grabbing everything in sight and gasping when i get to the checkout line. i still miss it though!

I so enjoy reading your blog! Especially on Mondays... I finally "learned" to clean about five years ago (unfortunately just as all my kids were leaving home) from FlyLady. Believe it or not, once I got the clutter out of my home (and my mind) I keep my home clean on 15 minutes a day. It really works! Check her out at flylady.net

Wise advise about the shopping...my hubby often says, "needs vs. wants." It really puts things in perspective at times. :)

And as far as cleaning...ugh! I certainly don't time it...I need some better motivation for dusting. It seems like no matter how often I dust, it returns with a vengeance, almost immediately. Stupid dust bunnies! haha...

Aw, I didn't know that about the 4th Monday of Jan! I'm not sad today, the sun is shining and I finally got a FULL refund on my Sears card that I have been battling for since Christmas. :)
As for cleaning, I usually try to do all major cleaning on Monday's then pick up here and there throughout the week. However, since being pregnant it tends to take me a whole week to get everything cleaned. ;)

jajajaj my grandma usually leaves like ten mssages and i have to check them all to delete them grrr lol and cleaning that way is the way i do....or 1-3 rooms a day? give urself sat and sun off?

Those pictures of you and Sage with the same smile is too cute!! Oh and there is no way I could clean for 4 hours!! I do my sweeping and dusting every night and it takes me about 30 minutes. :-)

Love your blog...I "linked up" for this first time today. I just started my blog last week and need some new followers :)

Stephanie said...

Yes- I've quickly learned that with a little one, a day full of cleaning just isn't possible! So I too adopt the 30 minutes a day rule :)

Lea said...

Oh, you gotta love us Grandmothers. :o)

Oh, Carissa, you will be so much the better if you truly do learn at your young age that "less is definitely more." It will save you from becoming a "slave to your stuff."

Yes, sweet little girl does have her Mommy's beautiful smile. Love it!

Oh, I'm like you, I prefer to do all cleaning at once and at this stage in my life, I can pretty much do that. I just like it all done at once. :o)

Always love our Monday "link up." Hugs!

Your Gradma is so funny!! And yes, Sage has your smile!!! She is getting so big!!! I bet you have great workout during the day because you carry her ;)

Kelli said...

Gotta love a great big smile! :) Sage is precious.
As for cleaning, I go in spurts. Sometimes I go in deep cleaning mode and I'll clean for HOURS. But I'm learning that a little at a time works much better for me. It is how I'm attacking the overall organization of my home. So far, it's working! :)

Annie said...

Love this line: "...and even if it was 50% off, it was still 100% more than we needed to spend." So true.

I'm a college student, so I'm one of those who starts cleaning and doesn't finish until everything's spotless. I'm trying to do a better job of maintaining my space now so I don't have to marathon clean, so I normally take twenty minutes or so after classes each day to straighten up my room so I can sit down and do homework in a little more peace.

Jocelyn said...

You and your little girly are so cute! I try to clean one room a day, but of course things like vaccuuming, laundry, and dishes tend to be daily jobs. and Target is one of my downfalls;-)

Brittany said...

This is my first time joining in! Love this :)

Your grandmom is just too cute.

Target gets me all the time too - it's like you go under a spell the moment you walk in.

haha, love the phone message =) and Target gets me every time too... their clearance racks... ugh!

I am a one shot cleaner usually, my husband is a little bit each day, very routine type... he does the "tidying" and I do the big, deep cleaning type of stuff. It has been working so far =)

Just the 3 of Us said...

I have been trying to avoid Target whenever possible. Last week instead of going I had my husband go after work to get deodorant and soda. He spent WAY less than I would have. Target just sucks the money out of me.

Kelli said...

That is so funny about your grandma. You should save those messages. The Dollar Spot at Target is what always gets me. I love the idea that's it's 100% more than we should have spent...I'm going to have to tell myself that :) Love the comparison between you and sweet Sage. It shows the joy you both have in your hearts...priceless. I'm working now trying to figure out about cleaning so I hope you got some good tips. Happy Monday.

cait said...

Grandmas are the best! That's so sweet how you see yourself in your little ones...what a fun, precious gift God gives us! My sis-in-law does the 30 minute routine. I started a "one or two things a day" list but that went out the window when I started grad classes. So right now...it's more of a "oh my, I haven't cleaned in weeks and can't stand it anymore" type cleaning. I'll get it down to an art...eventually. ;)

arsenalfamily said...

You have such a sweet and beautiful smile that it only makes sense that God would choose that to pass on to your daughter. I have certain things I clean on each day of the week. And I cross it off. And it helps. Woot! Sometimes the endcaps get me. Sometimes it IS smart to buy it because you will eventually 100% need it. If I do, I always pull from somewhere else on the budget.

McDancer said...

Oh my goodness, what your husband said about sales my dad has told me all my life.
And a hymn from psalm 118:24 has always been one of my favorites. Totally put a smile on my face :)

I loved this post! Sage is sooo adorable! With kids its waay easier to break up your cleaning, two reasons: because u don't ever have a lot of time just to clean like u said, and also because there's always something to clean with them around. I break up the chores for different days. I do bathrooms on Tuesdays, floors and vacuuming on Wednesdays and laundry on Fridays. I clean the kitchen as I cook, unfortunately that's an everyday thing. Lol to be honest, since my new baby was born I have been a bit off schedule and I couldn't have done everything without my hubby, but I am getting back to it slowly. Good luck to you, you're awesome mommy!

teamus614 said...

i guess less IS more with those things... unless it's what's IN the diaper, no? ;)
