miscellany on this monday.

grab the button, write random and link up below.

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1.  the giveaway winner.

congrats, to lily @ a lil' story!  you are the proud new owner of a lisa leonard gift card. i think it is especially sweet because i know lily plans on getting the marked by love necklace with her daughter, evie's name on it.  evie was born into the arms of Jesus at 36 weeks.  what a special necklace this will be.  happy shopping to you, lily!  by the way, lily has an adorable blog and a beautiful family.  : ) and, thanks so much, lisa, for this beautiful giveaway... we all adore your jewelry!

2.  #thisthing.
i'm not on twitter.  i have no urge to tell people what i may or may not be doing at any given point in the day.  plus, it would be too much to keep up with.  anyway, i started seeing #thisthing on facebook statuses and thought it had to do with twitter?.  i don't know.  whatever it is, i think it's cool. #thisthingiscool.

3. i want some ikea.
i've never been.  **gasp**  the closest ikea is about 3.5 hours away.  we are in need of some furniture (twin bed for hunter... he's days away from a jail brake, and an organizational type thing for toys) for cheap (and before you tell me to check craigslist, i already have.  i found nothing worthwhile.) which can only mean one thing.  an ikea trip is in our future.  i'm anxiously awaiting it.  do you ikea?

4. finding joy.

everyone should know about rachel at finding joy.  she's a wife to a cancer survivor, mother to seven, yes seven, homeschooler,  and a major encouragement to me.  her ability to see the Truths of Scripture in the everydays of life is inspiring.  the way she balances everything without dropping anything is amazing.  i admire her, and i'm certain you will too.

5. camera colloquy.
i know zilch about cameras.  imagine your great-great grandmother on facebook and you have the perfect picture of me with a camera in my hands.  well, my girl, becky at farmgirl paints (also known as awesome.  also known as my blog crush.) is way into photography.  she got a new camera and is even taking a class.  the best part is that she is writing all about it.  so, she's paying for the class and teaching me in the meantime.  thanks becky!  yet another reason why i love you. : )  i have always adored a good picture, (who doesn't?) but i haven't had the motivation to want to learn how to take one.  until i read this post.  (thank you again, becky.)   i'm turning into an aperture aficionado, an iso enthusiast and a shutter lover.  and meanwhile, i'm learning a handful of lessons.

lesson #1: when your subjects are your children and they are under the age of two AND you're shooting in manual it takes mad skill.  i'm not at that level.
although he was posing pretty nicely for this one.  i'm glad he dressed for the occasion.

lesson #2: when you're working with a semi-broken dslr, it takes extra skill.  yet again, i'm not at that level.  and, although i know something is wrong with this one, i don't quite know how to fix it.

lesson #3:  a little girl will start to get antsy and eventually scream like there's no tomorrow when forced to sit in the sun.  daddy dubs this picture as "Jesus coming back just for sage."

lesson #4: if you take hundreds of pictures, you might just get one good one.  maybe.  and it might be slightly good enough for a watermark.
i don't normally keep dried roses around the house.  except for these.  they're almost seven years old and from the evening kelly proposed to me.  : )

Yay for you on learning your camera. There are SO MANY resources online. I use to be a member of Prophotogs. (it's a paid site) Awesome. Awesome. But there are tons that are free also. Good Luck:)

I have never been to Ikea either. The closest one is very far away, but one day I hope to go!

I also have no photography skills, but am so envious of those who do. :)

I love love love taking pictures. I haven't had a training but I still enjoy some of the pics I take. You're pictures are great. I don't think anything was off with the lesson # 2 photo. It's a shot not often taken so it makes it interesting. The picture of you're little girl is my fav and your hubby's comment made me laugh.I'm just so thankful I live in a time where we have digital cameras so I can take 20,000 pics of my kids and not feel guilty about it.

When I went on vacation, I went to an Ikea. Sadly since I was flying home I couldn't buy furniture. I did buy some cute dog tail hooks though.

Yes, we IKEA! We're fortunate enough to live about an hour away from the IKEA in Tempe, AZ and we go down there at least three times a year just to look around. Their furniture is not on par with Ethan Allan, but who can afford Ethan Allan furniture?! We've bought dishes, glasses, linens, furniture, photo frames, and not been disappointed in anything. Hope you get to go soon...

Hi Carissa, I haven't commented in a while. Keep up on the camera practice (I'm sure you'll capture many wonderful memories of those adorable little ones). You've got me curious...so now I'm going to have to search #thisthing on Twitter. Have a great week! Lisa

I love Sage's rapture pic. Haha, that is so cute! Good for you for experimenting with photography! I'm a fan of shoot, look, delete: repeat. Until you get it right! LOVE the rose pic, very neat view!

I love IKEA! If only you lived in the same state as me I could pass along one of our storage shelves, we bought 2 for a great price and now only have room for 1. Seriously considering getting rid of a couch so i can use it for toys ;)
That picture of Hunter looking out the window is adorable!

Stephanie said...

Ok, well, I think your pictures are awesome (esp. the dried leaves!). Pro or not, you have some skillz ;)
I like Ikea, but I also think it's overrated. A lot of their stuff is fun and cute, but also not great quality. Just my opinion :)
I will have to check out Rachel's blog, thanks!

Wait, what? I thought you were some super skilled photog...and now I find out you're taking these rocking pictures on manual with a broken camera??! color me impressed.

ugh...IKEA. We finally got one, and while the prices are very cheap, you must never never go on a busy (read, weekend) day. It's like rats trapped in a maze - you can't get out!! yikes - I still have nightmares. But on the occassion I've gone during the middle of the day - there are wicked bargains to be found. PS - I was under the impression they would mail stuff via their website???

Thanks for awesomeness,
Nat

Ikea is fabulous! But, I strongly suggest you go in there with a game plan. It is seriously overwhelming and unless you have a plan, you might not get what you came for!

BARBIE said...

I have a Twitter account there. I have followers. But it's hard to get into a flow. I am trying, but it's not at the top of my list. Your pictures are wonderful. Love the one of "Jesus coming to get Sage"! And I love Rachel! She is one of the most inspiring bloggers I know! Blessings to you!

I love to shop at IKEA. I bought my bed from there 2 years ago and I still love it. Be sure to give yourself lots of time because the store is HUGE and you will want to look at everything. I've never had the food from there but I've heard it was pretty good. Have fun!

Kelly @ Blessed Mommy, Blessed Wife said...

I love IKEA but only up North - how weird is that? We have one that opened a few years ago about 20 minutes away and I have never gone to it. But, when we visit MA, it's a must stop for me. I already know I'm nuts :)

Adorable pictures...regardless of the skill!! They look quite familiar, actually ;)

Happy Monday!! It's always fun to join you :)

Stephanie said...

Oh goodness- I don't twitter either! Who has the time for that? IKEA = amazing! And I love the photo updates from Becky although I am still totally lost on the whole aperture thing. I really need to spend some time with it :) Happy Monday!

The trip to IKEA will be worth it! And your positive and encouraging comments about Becky make me want to check on her blog!

I love digital cameras because even though I have to take each shot ten times, usually one of the pics turns out ok, lol!

I love that you have the roses from when Kelly proposed...just beautiful. I love Ikea and have been once in CA but not here in Ohio. It's only 2 hours away and I need to make a trip because I love their stuff (and the price). Love, love Rachel's blog and after I read it I'm always inspired. Pray for her Samuel.

Confession: I haven't been to Ikea either. Therefore, I think after you go, you should blog about it. {Please?} I do have an Ikea catalog, through which I flipped once or twice, and I definitely want to go asap. Especially since getting my own apartment is in my future, and it will require furniture. I think ours is a while away, too; hmm. I am going to make it happen someday!

Jocelyn said...

I absolutely heart IKEA!!! So much fun stuff for afordable prices! Keep practicing with your camera...I think you are doing great!!!!

Rebekah said...

Just went to Ikea today! :). It's only 15 min from us, but we have to take it in doses! haha.. It's a madhouse, completely overwhelming, and you just want a giant nap afterwards. But their stuff is amazing!

Biggest tip - look online and decide a little bit of a ballpark about what you want before you go! Otherwise - you will literally scream out loud in the middle of the store. Or else sit down and have a mini-melt down. I may or may not have done one of these. I'll let you guess which one. ;) The showroom part is way way cool though!

Thanks for the tip about the photography! I'm always looking for new tips!

Hey, there, girlie! I'm wondering why my link didn't get submitted? I'm so sad...I submitted twice yesterday and for some reason it didn't take? waaaah...I'm going to have to figure that out before next week!! Any ideas?

I am so excited about the gift card! Thank you so much for hosting the giveaway =)

I heart this post, I heart IKEA (it is cheap stuff and it sometimes takes forever to put together, but I still love it!) and I heart taking pictures... I will have to check out becky's blog, I would love some tips.

oh, and I found Rachel's blog a few weeks ago- definitely encouraging! =)

can't wait to check out the blogs you mentioned in this post!

I went to my first IKEA this summer in Frisco, TX when we were at my hubby's best friend's wedding. It was fabulous!! My father-in-law decided it was the amusement parks of furniture stores, ha! It takes a lot to get him excited when it comes to that sorta thing!

It's a tad overwhelming b/c everything is a good price and I wanted everything. Go with a plan! ;)
