miscellany monday:

write random and link-up below.

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1.  gastronomical.
can anyone afford gas anymore?!.  geesh.  it's about $3.30/gallon for unleaded in our neck of the woods.  the whole supply-and-demand mumbo jumbo is annoying.... the supply hasn't altered, but they're anticipating an alteration because of the unrest in the middle east.  and so, the price goes up.  and we pay the price.  we are cutting back big time.

2. quotable:
3. toys-r-not-us.
i was looking through the recent toys-r-us circular and was seriously consumed with want for my kids.  it's so easy to want the "best" for your kids.  but feeding my want to give them things feeds their want.  i want our kids to grow up without a love for things.  and that has to be fostered.  so i abruptly threw my wantings out with that toys-r-us circular.

4. home clothes.
(part two.  part one is more expansive.)  over eleven years ago, i received a pair of black polar fleece 2000 comfy pants for christmas.  i am wearing them as i type and the years have not taken away any of their comfort.  i think they're like a good wine (so i'm told, since i don't like wine)... they just get better with age.  i do feel good about being the same size as i was in high school.  however, i wouldn't dare wear them outside of the house (they are aptly named... home clothes, remember).  how old is your oldest clothing article that you still wear?  can you beat my 11 yr old fleece?

5. a crafty critter...
i am not.  i want to make things.  pretty things.  the only problem?  i don't know what.  and i don't have money to spend to buy things in order to make things.  i think i could learn to sew.  but i'd need a sewing machine.  i could probably learn to paint, but if painting is like drawing then my paintings would be epic failures.  i want to have an epiphany and come up with something that no one else has and then have a really awesome etsy.  don't we all?!?!  : )  regardless, i am determined to make something pretty this week.  i am going to use fabrics from a few old things (not my polar fleece!) and a picture frame.  we'll see what i come up with.  i'll keep you posted.  literally.  ; )

6. oh happy day,
grandpa!  although he refers to computers as "machines" with a negative growl and i doubt he will ever read this, i must wish my grandpa a happy birthday.  he is battling his second bout of stage four cancer which makes this birthday all the more special.  we love you, gramps!

Wow, happy birthday to your Grandpa!

I do the same thing with toys and other kids' stuff. I now throw away those ads as soon as I see them. The last thing we need is more stuff, Celia's perfectly happy without it, and it's better for her to be happy without always wanting something.

Don't think I can beat you on the pants. I do have a pair of sweatpants that are probably around ten years old. I love them so much, but they're too thin and holey to wear in public anymore.

I love your "Toys-r-not-us"
I am so guilty for wanting the most and best for my kids-it's so easy to be that way but in reality it's not the way I want my kids to grow up being.
Thanks for the reality check!

That picture of Sage and your Grandpa is priceless! How special! I know you know how blessed you are to still have your Grandpa :) Happy Birthday and many prayers for his health! I had a little 'the kids have way too much stuff' epiphany this weekend as I was trying to organize their toys. I have joined you!

My favorite lounge/pj pants are from highschool. Recently the have gotten 2 holes and as my husband says, "It's about time we got rid of those." I am so sad. Seriously. Ha! I LOVE those pants. I wear them.all.of.the.time (inside my home only of course!). I'm going to hang on to them for now. :)
I also want an awesome etsy but an without an idea as well!

Oh, what a sweet, sweet picture and I'm so very sorry about your Grandfather's health situation. I have no doubt that you will come up with something very creative and crafty and will have an Etsy shop before it's over with. You have what it takes for sure! Be sure and register for my first blog giveaway. Hugs to you my dear!

I love to make things too! Lucky for me, I have a sewing machine, but I am not very good. :)

Gas prices = insanity.

The gas price here is Tampa for Unleaded is $3.51/gallon.

Happy Birthday to your Grandpa!

I'm laughing over your "home" clothes as I sit here in my home clothes. Sigh. What Not To Wear would probably love to light a torch to my closet. :)

Those fabrics make me want to sew. In all my spare time, you know? I wonder how my mother had time to sew for us when I was young. Then I remember. No computer (or at least a really archaic one), no cable or dvr -- I guess there really was time. Makes me ponder my time.

As usually, a lovely miscellany. :)

Have a great Monday!!!

Oh yeah, and gas prices? I think I need the Flinstone car...you know, the one where the feet move it? {I've got enough feet to maybe move it...}

Oh, that's a beautiful photograph. It brought an instant smile to my face.

Have a great day.

Gas is $3.60 here...ouch! Seriously I saw someone riding their bike in the snow last night and I thought smart man. It's just crazy! You should try crafting. I can see you doing that. It's really fun. Those fabrics were so pretty. I envy people who sew really well. It's super hard for me.

Stephanie said...

Oh jeez I wish I lived where you live! Gas here is about $3.95! It's a little outrageous and is just getting irritating!

A Northern Girl With A Southern Heart said...

Gas is so redic. It's like 3.60 here. =( And your gramps is in my prayers. =)

Lindy said...

Happy crafting. We are also at about $3.60 for gas. My hubby is a pastor so luckily some of it is reimbursed, but the mileage rate hasn't gone up to match the gas rate. Oh well. Maybe it will be warm enough to walk down town soon! Enjoy your week.

Happy Birthday to your grandpa! I don't have any clothes that are 11 years old...but I do have some 9-10 year old goodies! :)

I hope you know how inspiring your posts are! My boys have birthdays this week (5 days apart) and I'm in the middle of making out everything I "want" to give them. And you're SO right...I battle with my addiction to "stuff" and want to help them not ever catch it....thanks for this perfectly timed post for me.

Hope gramps sticks it to cancer. sending prayers of healing.

I make pretty words, other than that, I'm a hopeless crafter. To which my mom, crafter extraordinaire says, "The world needs consumers, too." (surely everything on etsy doesn't count as "stuff," right??)

Oh boy...it's been awhile since I've actually signed in and commented on blog posts. I have a cardigan that I've been wearing around the house a lot lately. My Gram knit it. It didn't fit her and I took it for myself in 1994 or 1995. I beat you by a few years. We're praying for your Gramp! And the family too.

BARBIE said...

Gas here is about almost $4.00 a gallon. We might very well be walking to work soon. I love that quote. I do the same thing when I look at a Toys R Us catalog. My kids know we cannot afford such luxuries, but it sure would be nice to be able to buy a few of their wants. It's very hard to say no, but I know in the long run, it's much better. Can't wait to see what you make. Oh, and the picture of Sage and your grandpa is priceless!

Kelli @ RTSM said...

I love to be crafty too and I have problems deciding what to make a lot of the time too:) I haven't made much of anything in the last month because I'm just stumped! Gas prices are crazy here too. In one day last week the prices went up like .30 cents per gallon!

ducksanddecisiveengagement said...

Sadly, I WISH it was $3.30 here! It's between $3.43 and $3.49.

I'm so excited to be linking up this week. It's my first time... and I always seem to have random things to share.
I feel you on the gas prices. I've been avoiding filling up all week and my gas light finally came on this morning.
Also, I just saw you're from Charleston. I'm from South Carolina too... nice to meet fellow bloggers from SC

We are at $3.50 a gallon here and I'm sure that by next week which is when we are on Spring Break that it will be higher.

Love that quote!

I love your fabric & your crafty desire :) Have you ever covered a journal with fabric? I made several a few years ago...just bought a composition book, hot glued a little batting around it, & then hot glued the fabric on & decorated with some ribbon or buttons. So easy & cheap & beautiful :)

Laura@Cowboy Boots said...

totally agree w/#3...how hard is it though to not want to shower them w/gifts....we try to instill in our kids...it's NOT the material things in life ...it's the love you can give through ur ♥ that counts...as they get older they are seeing this....

Tiffany said...

Gas prices are ridiculous!! I love your number three. My baby is just shy of eight months old and I just want to give him the world. But, I know that I want to instill values in him more than material desires. Of course we just want the best for our children, it's the mother in us. We can give them the best through experiences and showering with love! Happy Birthday to Grandpa! He looks so happy in that picture. Have a great week!

arsenalfamily said...

Not only have you gone 11 years in the same pants, you've had TWO babies and are still wearing the pants. I'm so proud of you! You are awesome!

Totally agree w/ you about toys and wants and all that!

You have me beat with an eleven year~old clothing item, I think! Then again, eleven years ago I had just turned 11, so I don't think I would want to be the same size as my pre~pubescent self! ;)

Happy birthday to your grandpa! {Would you believe that my high school computer teacher called them "machines" also? I didn't learn much in that class!!}
That picture of him & Sage is beautiful!

ugh, I cringe just driving by a gas station. I drive a suburban, and when I went to fill it up the other day, I reached the $100 limit...and the tank STILL wasn't full. :(

I wore my sixteen year old cross country sweatshirt from high school to my workout today! Love home clothes!

Totally hear ya on the whole gas thing. We have a fleet of gas hoggin' work trucks and cars we pay for, too. Not pretty.
LOVE Andrew Peterson. Well, his music. You know what I mean.
I can't say I have any home clothes. I recently purged my closet, and it's nearly bare. I can't wear tshirts from my youth, and can't say I have any pants that old, either. I do have a favorite pair of maternity workout pants from target, that are older than the hills. I wore them before I was pregnant, the only thing maternity about them is their fold over waist band. Totally permissible. Ha.

Oh girl - I am STRUGGLING with No. 3 - please give me some tips?? How do I do it?? My 5 year old takes th circulars every week and circles almost everyTHING that he wants. He writes letters to Santa almost daily. I am blowing it and need som ideas!

thank you. i actually have the lowest end nikon you can get(d40). not sure they even make it any more. i've discovered that the lens makes the difference. i have a sigma lens, and i love it.

i feel you on the gas - i'm paying $3.50 for unleaded. i'm definitely not a fan.

i love the quote you shared!

#3 -- Sometimes "the best" is teaching our kids self-discipline and the joy of being content...Still working on that one myself. Maybe that's why the Lord keeps giving us kids -- so I have lots of opportunity to teach these things! :)

Gas is $3.59 here and it's ridiculous!! I'm gonna have to start hoofing it to work soon!

Shelby Bukhenik said...

I am with you on the battle of what to give my babies, because I don't want them to want unnecessary things!

I was also remembering when you weren't sure about doing this miscellany monday meme and people actually said it might not work...well it does and I love it!!

Lori said...

Happy birthday to your grandpa! He is adorable. :)

I love the idea of raising your kids to not want 'things' ...

Also I just linked up! a day late :(

Piper said...

I love that you want to make old things into new things! Don't forget you can also knit and crochet fabric strips---no sewing machine required!

marilyn said...

Gas is way to high out here. At Costco last week it was $3.85 and around our city it's $3.97. and rising.

I have a skirt and sweater that I wore in the 50's from my high school days. It is used only for a 50's outfit. It isn't a good fit any more. Wonder why - HA?

Tonight I showed Grandpa your post, so yes, he did look at it and smile.

Happy birthday to your grandpa!

As for home clothes... I am currently reading/writing this comment in my 6th grade PE shirt. It is still SO comfy, haha. That would have been....15 years ago. OMG yuck.

Carissa, LOVED this! "gastranomical" hahahahha! Happy Birthday to Grandpa!
You have me beat with your fleece... and I am envious for two reasons... you are the same size as you were in high school... and you have an awesome pair of 11 yr old fleece pants!
Have a pretty day!

My MIL refers to the workings of a computer as its "brain". Cracks me up! Sadly I have a sewing machine, which was a Christmas gift from my husband about 5 years ago. Then I started having kids and haven't made much time for more than a few little straight-line projects. I do intend to make some burp cloths for #3 on the way. We'll see if my good intentions become a reality as the countdown is on!

cait said...

good luck with your crafty adventures! I love being creative but I never devote enough time to it! Love what you said about not feeding the "wants". I so agree with modeling for your children the importance of not having a case of the "I wants".
