miscellany monday on memorial day.

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

one. he works hard for his money fish.
i'm married to a fisherman.  not like the deadliest-catch kind, (thank goodness, i think i'd live in a perpetual state of stress if that were the case) the poor-man's fishing kind of fisherman.  grab your fishing pole, buy some shrimp (with the heads off, if the budget allows) and head to your nearest beach.  i won't mention the tackle box, fishing cart, shrimp knife, cooler --in case of a good catch, and twenty other things that i haven't a clue as to what they are, that my man always brings/needs.  his motto? a day at the beach without your fishing pole is not a day at the beach.  i always remind him of my low-maintenance beach going - all i need is a towel, a good book, and i'm set for hours.  however, i will say that i do like to fish and even bait my own hook.  and i didn't just do that while we were dating.  i'm the real deal.

two. a namesake.
since we're on the subject of beach going... let's talk for a moment about waxing.  ouch.  did it once and never again comes to mind.  while picking up some shave gel at target, i came across parissa.  it caught my eye since it was one letter off from my first name.  and considering my maiden name starts with a i was almost convinced it was my claim to fame.  until i saw what it was... a home waxing kit.  it's good to know that i share almost the same letter arrangement with something that is sure to bring women a whole lot of horror.

three. number one continued.
{commence fishing lesson} once at the beach, wade through the surf, get ankle deep and cast till your hearts content or until you catch something that's hopefully big enough to feed your family.  that is, as long as you have the guts to clean out the fish's guts.  confession: i often convince my husband not to bring home the fish.  not because it isn't delicious, because believe me, a fresh catch is the best way to eat fish, it's just stinky and bloody.  not for the faint of heart.  i'm faint.  often.

four. say cheese.
my kids love shredded cheese.  shredded cheese is messy... i find it in random spots along our baseboards hundreds of yards away from the kitchen... and i'll pretend that i don't tell the dog to eat it rather than picking it up myself.  but since the kids are cute, i indulge their uncanny desire for only shredded cheese.  string cheese?  euwww.  cubes of cheese? that's for mice.  slices of cheese?  that's for the deli.  get with the program, mom.

five. memorial day.
i'm thankful today...  we have the blessing of more than many freedoms.  and it doesn't come for free.  a price has been paid for it.  the price is being paid for it.  thank you military men and women for all of your sacrifice; may it never go unnoticed.

enjoy your day,
carissa

Lovely photos! I agree, that last photo? Amazing.

Ah, and shredded cheese. I can hear my older kids -- who help clean the kitchen -- telling me, "no, not the shredded. The mess, mom, the mess!" hee hee hee

Your fishing story reminds me of when we go to the lake. We all become "serious" fisherpeople for about 6 days. My poor dad will be in the fish house having to clean those pan fish. I'll walk by and smile, and thank him, and well, keep walking so that I don't get too big a whiff of the fish house smell.

Next time I go to Target I'm looking for Parissa. I'll have to take a picture. :)

Have a wonderful {and restful} Memorial Day.

Rachel
and thank you, again, for ALL of your prayers, and kind words, and encouragement for Samuel.

My hubby is out fishing with my two oldest right now. They have been working on a little boat that my dad gave them that was full of holes, and Jason finally finished it yesterday. I don't mind fishing with them, but there is no way I am baiting my own hook or cleaning the catch:)

oh the beach! would love to be there right now! You know I'll go even further with the dog thing...I'm always tempted to let him lick the plates before putting them in the dishwasher, because let's be honest, they can get it cleaner a lot faster than rinsing it off. Gross, I know. That's why I fight the temptation. My twin nieces LOVE shredded cheese. Sage is such a cutie...she looks mighty happy eating that cheese! :)

I have to say, that fishing cart is pretty stinkin' awesome! We have no beaches here, so camp chairs and a tackle box (ATV optional) are all one needs to fish from shore. My Hubby loves to fish, but he won't eat the fish. Just cleans it and gives it to me to prepare. Stinker...thankfully Q loves fish, so I finally have a fish eating buddy. I imagine ocean fishing is soooooo much fun!

Waxing: I tried like half of my leg and the pain caused me to give up. Oh Em Gee. People do that, all the time? Eeeek!

Word to the shredded cheese. Q likes colby jack cheese sticks, but soon I will be shredding it for the Sister child.

Have a great week!

Amazing pictures...girl you are getting really good:-) I had to laugh at your comment about the dog cleaning up...I always call our dog to come in first instead of hauling out the vacuum!!! My youngest loves his shredded cheese (of course he will eat cheese any way, shape, or form) and we find it all over the place too. Hiding in the couch cushions is the worst! And you bait your own hooks? Kudos to you...I won't touch the stuff;-)

Your waxing made me laugh. It's not that bad, really. I think if you have the right waxer, it can be the best experience ever. Mine's amazing, and as she's said to me, what's 15 seconds of pain for weeks of smoothness? So true. I've gotten it done so many times, that it's no biggie. But one the other side, I went to a horrendous waxer who made it the most miserable experience ever.
Just come over to CA and I'll introduce you to Juli. She'll treat you well. ;)

Happy Memorial Day!

I love to fish too... we always load up when we r at the beach and head down to the pier. When we there last time, I caught a hammerhead shark (a small one of course). I was pulling it up and as soon as I seen what it was, my line broke! The boys were with us and they talked about it for days- I was the coolest mama ever that week :)

#4 - I've been known to sprinkle shredded cheese on my babies' trays too. I consider it busy work for babies. :)

And consider yourself frugal! Rather than wasting that discarded cheese, you're saving money on dog food, right??!

Haha! I laughed outloud when you say you pretend to not tell the dogs to eat it rather than pick it up... I do the same! Seriously- those pups are just much more thorough that I would be! :)
