what do you do when it's 10 pm, the kids JUST got put to bed, and you're tired from a busy day in the beautiful sunshiney humidity? be really really grateful that your kids normally have a 7 pm bedtime. and write an entry about fashion. something shallow, yes... because well there's nothing deep running through my fried mind. and before we get to the icing on the cake - fashion, that is - we have to start with a few layers. just a few, though. don't worry. it's only a double layer cake.
cousin gracie and hunter are just a week apart. i'm bound and determined to get some good shots while they're here... but with six cousins ranging in age from almost 1 to 7, it's close to impossible.
layer two - since the cousins are in town all week, the bedtimes have been blown out of the water, causing my crazy kids to do even crazier things...
like turn into mommy's-sunglasses-wearin-giraffe-boy
and dinosaur-sticker-man who couldn't be more proud of his new collaged look.
and you better believe we had fun taking all of the 1,000 stickers off before the two-hours-prior-to-midnight bedtime. it was less of a waterworks episode than i imagined... so that's good news, yo.
and now for the icing on the cake. yes, this gets better. wait, is it allowable to write a post about fashion all while using cakey analogies? why not. just as long as you don't eat too much cake that you can't fit into your fashion.
for the last three summers i've been either pregnant or have just had a baby. it was completely fun while it lasted, but i'm really enjoying my clothes fitting this time around. : ) i used to be fashion-forward. but then something happened... all the in-style clothes looked only acceptable for teeny boppers and not married mama's. i guess i took a few steps back; my forward became backwards as i opted for practicality... it wins out every time. which is why i wear dansko's in the winter. but this is summer, so rainbow flip-flops are on the docket. which make me a tiny bit cooler.
i've never been a stripes person. someone once told me they make you look wider than you are. who wants that? no one. however, consumer marketing and their consuming tactics have won me over. they're really good at what they do, because i'm all over stripes this year. just call me zebra... not to be confused with an animal prints lover, though... the genius marketers have not outsmarted me in that particular category.
my mom, in her sweeter-than-cherry-pie sweetness, gave me $25 for Mother's Day (she's the mother and gave me a gift? sweet, indeed!) and insisted i only spend it on myself. if i didn't, i'd have to pay her back. twist my arm a little more, why don't you. with my loot, i got two stripey shirts and a pair of shorts. thank you very much mom and gap outlet:
(sorry for the lame-o picture quality on this one)
wood jewelry is my favorite. it falls into that practicality category because it goes with everything. i also like tribal-type necklaces. especially with elephants. i hardly ever wear necklaces since they become a highly accessible teething toy, but i'm loosening my apron straps ever so slightly --sage turns one tomorrow - gasp! more on that later. : )
i had an old navy gift card that was burning a big whole in my pocket, so without thinking twice... really even once for that matter, i spent it on this dress:
i have yet to wear it and i bought it back in january. it's so bold and butterflyish; i'm nervous. attention dress: i said i loved you but i lied (that's for you, Liz). go ahead, call me michael bolton. it's too late for a return so i am stuck. instead of feeling like i wasted a gift card; i'll put on some nerves along with the dress and wear it without looking back. wish me sunny skies and butterflies.

Cute outfits!
You should check out Mommynecklaces.com - They are not teething necklaces but they are safe for kids to pull and twiddle with. I love them!
:)
You need to wear that dress! I love it!
You can totally rock that dress!
Love that dress! I also am totally envious of the jewelry! Cute finds!
the dress is cute. you're allowed to wear it :)
on the note of fashion - my little sister (who is 17) felt the need to tell me that i don't dress like i used to. "what do you mean?" i asked. her response "you know. stylish." thus giving me enough gusto to go out and buy something.
one of these days i'm actually going to talk to you in person. love reading your blog, carissa.
I love that dress! And what a sweet Mom you have!
have a great weekend :)
oooh love your dress!!! i may have to jump in and try the whole 'belt' around the waist stuff - i'm still a little hesitant since i'm so short! (4'11.5'') i'm your newest follower :) love your blog - absolutely adorable!!!
I LOVE the gap shirts! I'm addicted to v necks right now! And those shorts are super cute! I was about to go hop on to oldnavy.com to hunt down that dress until you said you got it in January! Rock it girl! It will be so cute this summer!
The dress is gorgeous and I'm sure you will be so in it. Hooray for splurging on yourself a little bit! We all need a little pick-me-up like that now and again ;)
I love that dress! You can definitely pull it off.

i'm kinda sorta in love with those outfits, but really...i just want the butterfly dress... ;)
i now wear the uniform (black nursing tank and either charcoal or black skirt) one day i'll join the 'either i was pregnant or had a baby' phase with you! :o)
I felt the same way about a romper I got last summer, but it ended up being one of my favorite items! You'll look great in it! Perfect date night dress!! Which should give you even more of an excuse to get out with your hubby! ;) Love how your mom pampered you...moms are so good like that!
I love the dress. I'm glad that it's past the return date -- ha ha ha -- so now you MUST wear it. It's very cool.
And, I love gift cards where they are to spent only on the mom. Great gifts.
Wood jewelry? A must for moms.
And the first pics? Precious.
I have one of Hannah and Chloe covered in stickers when they were 3 and 2 -- so precious. That picture of yours reminded me of the picture buried away in our office.

Totally feel ya on the bold print uncomfortableness. I wore my friend's very bright very bold very pink top last week and I was so very self conscious yet everyone loved me in it, so if it worked for me (though not too sure I'll ever a top like that myself) I say your dress will work for you.
Just hold your head up high! ;) (loved the cousin and sticker picture by the way)
You are going to look so cute!!! I love it all! Your style is so cute! Yay for being a hot mama!
Those outfits are super cute! I can NEVER find anything good at the gap, for some reason. AND I love, love, LOVE that dress! Flaunt it! I bet it will look amazing!
Love the dress!
very cute post... and yes thank God they go to bed early! ha!
My dear, you will be the "belle of the ball" in that cute "butterflyish" dress. Do post pictures when you wear it.
I know you had a lot of fun making memories when family was in town. Hope Hunter and Sage went back to their regular bedtime without a lot of trouble. :o)
See you tomorrow for MM!
ohhh kids and stickers...drives me insane! and your outfits are adorable. i'd love to wear stripes but i think i should lose a few inches on the waistline first. lol maybe after my 30 (or 60 or 90) day shred. ;) rock the dress, girl!
Enjoy that sweet time with cousins - I love the start of those friendships that just grow sweeter each year. For most of my kids, their best friends are cousins - even though they live a long ways away!
