out with the new. in with the old.

a couple of observations these eyes of mine have uncovered:

1. the economy is sagging.

2. thanks to the ever present help of etsy, it's easy to get your hands on any and everything vintage without even setting foot in an antique store.

put 1 + 2 together and you get 3.

3. old fashioned pretty things are in.  trendy even.

it took some time, but i've fallen for them...the olden day's goods.  i don't know if these classic finds are really all that cheaper than buying new, but it will be fun while it lasts.  i can go treasure hunting at my grandmother's house now.  : )

i went to an antique store and enjoyed it, for the first time.  i remember when i was 9ish, being dragged to these shops... they were stinky, old, boring, boring and boring.  until now.  i'm glad i'm a grown up.

it was such a charming store.

the only thing is, when you go to these old timey, shabby shops, with your grandmother, she tells you what these mason jars would've cost back then.  and after looking at the price tag and seeing that the price has been multiplied by close to 100, it's hard to buy anything.

and then it's really sad when grandma says, "oh we had a camera like this and took it to goodwill."  break my heart why don't you.

aqua painted, good looking, hanging rack shelf thingy, where have you been all my life?

more aqua... be still my heart.  this desk was $45 and the perfect size for my hunter.  good thing my house was 3,000 whole miles away otherwise i would've come home with this "necessity."

another desk.  i had visions of shabbifying it white for sage.

i didn't buy anything at the summer cottage.  however, my grandma gifted me some of her vintage... she gave me this decades old avon necklace.  it's stunning, gold, coral, and a perfect accessory to most outfits.

as if the necklace wasn't enough, i received my grandfather's thirty year-old 35 mm, pentax camera with three lenses, the coolest hippie-like strap you've ever seen, along with a case that's sturdier than any they make these days.  it's a timeless keepsake that will be cherished... and babied.  : )

have you fallen for old-fashioned?

i feel the same way about antiques!!

and then i balance that with "well... they're probably one of a kind." and end up buying them anyway!

What a cool camera! I remember hating stores like that when I was little too...they were really stinky and boring! Now I think they are fun, but mostly too expensive for me:)

Oh, goodness -- love all those treasures! I've been wanting some blue mason jars for soooooo long. And a pentax cam + three lenses? LOVE! Been on my wishlist! I've been wanting to get into film photography for awhile, so looking for a good camera. Perhaps I'll have to check out amazon. ;)

Oh, I don't know how you could pass up the aqua desk and shelf! And what a treasure to have your grandfather's camera. I'm sure you'll have fun with it! I'm loving vintage and old-fashioned more and more these days.... not long ago I only loved new, bright and shiny! It's funny how things change!

I am LOVING aqua right now, I'm not sure why. And yes to older treasures, they truly are beautiful and in my opinion, more warm and inviting than their newer more modern counterparts. :)

What an awesome store! And yes, it is hard to buy things when you see what they cost even 10 years ago..much less decades ago.

I am all about some mason jars lately! And antique, wooden windows made into either mirrors or picture frames. Just love those

I have always loved old fashioned treasures. It's fun to think about who has used this before and what was their life was like. That desk is gorgeous...so sad it was 3,000 miles away. :(

My best friend introduced me to the stunningly beautiful world of vintage. Currently, my husband and I are living in a tiny pokey apartment with very few liberties as to decorating. But when we FINALLY get our house, look out, vintage world. Our house will become your new home. =)

Nice camera! That store had a bunch of really great treasures! I never find anything I want to buy in "vintage" stores in my hometown.

I'm a huge history lover so anything that has a story is instantly a treasure to me. I am loving all of your pictures. Everything is awesome!

I used to be the same way! I hated going into antique stores up until a couple years ago and now i want everything inside them. I actually (when I had the ability) blew hundreds of dollars at one and had to be reined in.

I love them a little too much. haha

That camera is beautiful. I'd be cherishing it myself...and those desks, to die for!!

..this is why I don't go in antique stores anymore. haha

Honey, I've been an old fashioned girl since way before it was cool! ;) When I was just a very little girl, a dear cousin of my Daddy's was very ill and he had always been such a sweetheart to me. On our last visit to his farm before he passed away, he insisted on giving me an antique electric clock. Very old, as in from the time the first electric clocks were made. I may have been only 6 or 7 years old, but I treasured that gift and allowed my love for it to develop into a passion for all things old. I'm SO sentimental. Isn't it fun to imagine a story behind each old thing you see? :) As for your camera, I'm VERY HAPPY you were given that priceless treasure! I know you appreciate its history as much as its functionality. :)

Oh I've loved anything old my whole life, my mother put on the antique show in our town and I grew up going to them so that old smell just makes me feel at home! So glad you've fallen! And what treasures your grandmother gave you, enjoy!

You're so luck you have an antique store near your house! I think I'm going to start checking etsy for vintage items! Thanks!

I"ve ALWAYS loved vintage! my mom has told me time and time again i should have been born in the 40's and that I'm an "old soul". :) When it comes to my house, I have to take it in stages since my hubby loves modern. My vintage milk glass collection (found mostly in goodwill's and salvation army's for dirt cheap) is my biggest love - but I did transform our bedroom into what I now call my favorite style, "romantic vintage". ha! Archie threw in the modernish picture for good measure, but the contrast looks great.

We collect old camera's too, and have great luck at estate sales - like $5 for old camera's, and some friends gift them to us every so often because they know we like them. When you like old fashioned, lots of people throw stuff your way, which makes great, FREE old fashioned! :)

Next time I visit your sweet state you and I will browse those beautiful vintage shops.

And that camera? There cannot be a price put on it. It's absolutely beautiful -- and the thought of your grandfather putting it up to his eye and capturing memories makes it all the more special.

Love ya.

my new obsession is vintage milk glass vases, ahh, I love them! I had to settle for a white vase at target for 12 instead of the 30$ one off etsy. Also- that aqua color- especially the mason jars are a fav of mine too. If you like aqua- you'll love my new house- my living room is about 2 shades lighter than that aqua in your pic. I love all of them! :)
