miscellany monday meets october

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1a. i like to hit up the garage sales of the rich and (probably not) famous whenever i can find them.  we, meaning my mom, my sister and myself along with my kids (it's a brave thing to take a 1 and 2 year old garage sale-ing... i give myself a "the deals will make it worth it" pep talk the entire time), in a borrowed (from my in-laws) crown victoria.

1b. no matter how hill-billy we may have looked with a bicycle, table with two chairs, a stroller, a doll stroller, a cart full of books, a few toys all sprawled out from front to back of the vehicle, we made it home with all our priced-like-dirt loot. i spent $33 and probably saved five times that.  and even if i had only found this retro radio flyer (for $5), that was lovingly welcomed into hunter's bicycle hungry hands - he's been asking for a bike all summer - it would still be worth it.

if you look closely you'll see two sets of cute feet...

she hitched a ride.  she was exhausting... his face says it all.

a chair to the table i found.  it needs a paint job, but it's so farmhousey vintage that i can barely bring myself to changing it.  they glued their hiney's to these chairs for a whole day.

3. photoshop actions make life way easier.

4. for the first time ever, i bought the all-natural, bleach and phosphate free dishwasher detergent.  and for the first time ever, my dishes smell like chemicals.  this goes nowhere in the convincing my husband natural products are better arena.

5.  my kids have mostly hand-me-down toys and clothes.  i don't feel like they're lacking anything because of it.  while in that wealthiest neighborhood mentioned earlier, a mom was telling me how she felt so guilty for making her second daughter where all of her older sister's clothes.  it's funny how the western world thinks... there are millions of children without any clothes or brace yourself, even food... now that's something we should think about.  ::stepping off my high-horse now::

sage with her used bitty baby stroller that was $1.50.

6. it's much harder to refuse comfort food in the fall, this said while eating ice cream.

7. this girl knows how to get all prettied up.

Happy October! I know I say this every time but you seriously have two of the most adorable, photogenic kids either! Their cheeks kill me! So, so sweet :)

I'm way jealous of your bitty baby steal! $1.50? That's awesome! Noelle isn't getting one, haha!

Just caught up a bit - I've been absent from the blog world for a while. SO happy to hear of Kelly's new gift of hearing. That is awesome! And your dragonfly picture? Simply breathtaking!

Hope your week ahead is a blessed one, sweet friend! xoxo

We have that retro inspired radio flyer trike. And ours has the same rusty look -- thanks to it being left outside many, many, many times. We love it. I know Hunter will enjoy that tricycle! I think we got it when Gracie was a baby and it's still in good shape {except for the little bit of rust on the chrome parts}.

My kids wear hand me down and garage sale find clothes. And, yes, you're right we need to get our priorities straight sometimes.

Could Sage be ANY cuter?
And what kind of ice cream did you enjoy? My fave right now is mint chocolate chip.

love and hugs~

AMAZING deals! Way to go!!! I am so envious of the little table and chairs. I have been looking for a used table and chairs for my little Ellington, but haven't found anything yet. I'll keep searching though! :)

Your kiddos are precious and I can't believe how big they are getting!

Lovely finds! We get a lot of our stuff from the thrift stores too. And were not suffering at all because of it. :D

What a cute chair! It looks so vintage-y...*sigh*

Great pictures! Love yard sales but just haven't been going this fall...and all the good ones were this past weekend. I wouldn't paint that table. Looks so good with the paint chipping off(But then I like old looking stuff). I love her head bands. Cora does that all the time...too cute!

Liz said...

Oh my goodness how cute are they sharing the trike?!! I love the last picture of Sage so adorable!!!

You found some great finds! A lot of the things I got for Casey are second hand...I really don't care and I know he doesn't! Being able to get more for less is always satisfying!

Sage looks so grown up!!!
Man, I can never find those kind of deals at garage sales! That tricycle is AWESOME!! Nice work with the photoshop!!

With my first child, I thought everything had to be new - until I found out about children's resale shops! I could not believe the low prices and had to face my utter stupidity, and let the kids enjoy! My Mother recently picked up 2 ragged looking big wheels from the side of the road -my boys love those things more than anything that has been bought from the store!

How sweet!!
I love all your finds!!
That little bike + table are amazing!

Kelli said...

That bike is the coolest EVER! I love that you give yourself a pep talk...I would do the same. You scored some amazing deals...I'm sure it was all worth it. That smile on Hunter's face is just priceless...and I love that his sister is on the back. I'm going to figure out photoshop one of these days.

Yay! had a little trouble getting my comment to post...you may see two link-ups from me....sorry! I love the trycycle built for two!!! They will have so much fun with that! You've ignited my need to climb into the attic and pull my girls' table and chairs down for the granbaby!!! Love your site! terri

Where would we be without items with previous experience;) My kids wear mostly all hand-me-downs too, and proud of it! Glad you found such steals at the garage sales!

The last pic of Sage is beyond sweet...I love the accessories...she has much better style than me :)

siddathornton said...

i think hand-me-downs are better than brand-new, but that's just me. such a cute picture of them both on the tricycle!

BARBIE said...

Yippee for garage sale finds. That picture of your kiddos on the trike is priceless! And Sage is a doll, all dressed up or not. My children have always worn hand-me-downs as well. I can still get away with it for my 11yo daughter and 8yo son. However, my teen and young adult, well, they are forced to buy their own clothes when I can't afford them.

I miss linking up here. I will be back, one day! Have a beautiful Monday!

I love a good yard sale! I never thought about going to a nice neighborhood yard sale--such a great idea!! :)

Girl, you did GREAT!!! I'll join you on your soapbox (#5). I'm amazed at how many people asked if we were moving out of our 2/2 because baby #3 is on the way...because what we need is more space to collect more non-essentials and teach our children that having more things makes you happy. Ugh. I totally wrote a post about it not too long ago. Thank you pregnancy hormones :)

I love that picture of them on the bike! :) SO CUTE!

Brother and Sister on the bike? Too Cute!!!

LeAnna said...

Oh my good golly, they are soooo cute! Love that last pic of Sage, and the one of the two of them on the bike. Perfection! (And amen about actions!)
Love the table, that is TOO cute.
Boo to natural automatic dish detergents. I've never found any that work. I will say that vinegar does a fantastic job as a rinse aid replacement, but I buy the "bad" dish soap because it's the only thing that works for us. Our water is super hard, and I always thought it had something to do with that...

Emily w/Amazing Grapes said...

I enjoy you so much.

that is all.

Ok, I'll say more. I completely missed the extra set of feetsees, so thanks for pointing them out, they are so cute! Love her dress up! Love the chair...don't paint it!

Great buys and totally getting on or I think I'm on now, the whole don't buy full price, at least get it for sale..and when the kiddies come 1 day, buy used, train. OR bandwagon. Whatever people are on now a days.

I've been missing a few weeks from Misc. Monday and I've missed it. Life has been hard for us the last month or so. I finally had the chance to put together a post and link up. We had cookies and ice cream for dinner last night!

i'm glad you're having fun...i've just started playing with actions...i'm a bit of a control freak and feared letting a program make my life easier...try opening whatever image you want to be your watermark as a "smart image" then duplicating that to your pictures...or saving your text box as a psd and incorporate that into an action.

Your kids are ADORABLE! The pictures of them are so sweet!
