the winner + a photoshoot

so, in my dreams i know everything there is to know about cameras, lenses and picture taking... don't we all?!  and then there is reality.  i piddle with my Canon T2i and my sole lens of 50mm.  which is fantastic, if you wondered.

my sister-in-law asked me to take her family pictures and i obliged with the disclaimer, "i'm no photographer."  although, i did feel like a million bucks after she trusted me to shoot her family.  i was so excited and nervous and wishing i had another lens the whole time.  a 50mm prime (no zoom) is great for bokeh and such, but for an entire photo session, it's kind of complicated and limiting.  i needed some zoom and wide angle!  needless to say, i'm still no real photographer, but it is fun to pretend.  for a newbie amateur, i'm pretty happy with the results.  and my sister-in-law "client" was too.  win-win.

if you take pictures, what lenses do you have?  i need a second option (i'm leaning wide-angle) but i need some ideas and opinions and preferably something that doesn't cost as much as a car.  because then we might as well get a second vehicle so i'm not trapped at home everyday.  but that is besides the point. : ) i need to know what to tell my parent's to get me for Christmas.  ; )

this one is my favorite, which is why this isn't the first time you're seeing it!

on to things like winning...

the winner of the stunning Legacy Bracelet (per random.org's integer generator) is... Georgia Reed from Reed Up: Africa and Back Again!  how exciting.  congratulations, Georgia (please email me)!  i know you are going to love wearing yours as much as i do mine.  and thank you Amy of Legacy Bracelets for this amazing giveaway.

have to admit, kinda sad i'm not the winner...but i need to have a few more kids first anyway, haha! awesome pics, carissa! you did a magnificent job...and such a cute family to work with! while in nashville, my husband's uncle (who knows much more about photography than i) gave me a photography tutorial and we discussed lenses...he recommended the 17-85mm (i'm pretty sure...i'll double check)...not sure how this works for photo shoots, but i think in general it gives much greater options for picture-taking!

Good job! Especially love the one of them looking at each other. i have same camera and same lens. We are saving for a wide angle lens and will not be able to afford it for a long time:)

Looooove these!!! You did a great job, lady. I really, really, really like that bottom one, too. And the grass with the girls? The textures are so great, softness of little girls in creamy sweaters and the textured whispiness of the maiden grass.
You have a good eye, which some "professional" photographers don't even have! I'll never be able to consider myself a professional. I like artist better, ha! ;)

A have a Tamron 18-270mm lens, and really love it. It's so versatile going to the beginning of a wide angle, ut with the zoom. Their new one has an on board motor so it's much faster than their older model. But, I used the older model with no problems at all. You could probably buy a used one for a few hundred dollars. My reason for going with it was so that I didn't have to carry a lot of lenses with me. I have two, it and my beloved 50mm.

If you have a locally owned camera/photo store, stop in and ask them if you can try a few lenses on your camera. That's what I do, I stick in on my camera and then play with it a little in the store. They just might even have a refurb on sale, ya never know! ;)

I LOVE my 18-200mm lens. It does just about everything (not great with macro). It's pretty lightweight and has incredible zoom - I was like a kid in a candy store after only having the standard kit lens!!

Definitely planning on getting a fixed 50mm next for infant and child portraits, but I won't ever need more than that since the zoom lens is so versatile!

The last one is my favorite too. :) I only have a 50mm, but because the entry-level cameras (like the xsi, t1i, t2i, etc...), have a cropped sensor, the 50mm is really equivalent to an 85mm. I'm hoping to purchase the 35mm, because I love me a wide angle lens! But other than that, I just use my nifty fifty for everything. :)

50mm lenses on cropped bodies are great for portraits. They make sure you have to be far away enough from your subject so that you don't have any NBED (nose big, ears disappear) problems. Very wide angle lenses are not the best for portraiture unless you are having to shoot groups in tight spaces and don't have another option. For your next lens, get a telephoto lens that will allow you to get some macro shots and a decent amount of zoom. Don't worry about getting anything with massive amounts of zoom because for everyday shooting you probably won't use that much zoom often and it will just weigh/slow you down. Anything with a range between 18-100mm should do just fine. Look at Sigma lenses and other less expensive lens manufacturers that make lenses for Canon mounts to cut back on price and look on eBay for good used lenses. I know that's what I do! I just got a new Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.8 for my Sony for $200 on Ebay. Pay attention to the max aperature as well if you shoot indoors/low light when picking lenses.
