the verdict is...

...i've gone all nutty like Betty White.
i kissed my brain cells goodbye, just as you suspected.  yesterday morning i gallantly announced to my husband and to facebook that it was day one of potty training BOTH of my children, Hunter: age 2 (almost 3) and Sage: 19 months.  in theory it was a grand idea, similar to Machu Picchu, and almost declared a wonder.  the three day method is miraculous, is it not?  my hopes were as high as the moon.
it started out as smooth as a gravel road.  Hunter cried over not wearing any pants, who can really blame him? he refused to stand up for awhile and insisted on tucking his shirt below his knees.  i was losing some hope right about then. somehow with the distraction of Little Einsteins he got over it quickly.  the appeal of flushing his stuff down was all it took to lure him in.  we made it through the whole long day with only one tiny accident, which he practically recovered and made it to the potty in the nick of time, minus some dribbles.  no biggie. i told him i was super proud of him and he replied, "i'm proud of you, too mom."  why thank you.

Sage.  it's likely to be a traumatic memory. in two hours i soaked up pee from our carpets seven times and wished for hardwood. with a floor to potty ratio of 7:1, i put her back in a diaper.  let's just say that bluebeary sat on the potty much more than Sage ever did.
also, a salesman rang our doorbell during naptime.  how dare he do that in the middle of the three day potty training method.  what the heck.  in the land of online shopping, door-to-door sales are like five steps backwards.  will they ever learn already?

all in all, it was easier than i psyched myself up for; what a gift! Kelly has his longest days, like 14 hours, on Tuesdays (lucky for him, i didn't think about that when i planned it) and it was 70 degrees outside.  if i could've planned it all over again, i'd go for a soggy, 50 degree Wednesday.  Sage agrees as she looked out at the kids playing under the warm sunny sky. but there's no complaining here.  our diaper budget is well on its way to being cut in half. this is wondrous.

ps. i did watch Ellen yesterday.  it's kind of an old favorite pastime.  it's been months upon months since i'd seen a show.  well, Seal was on.  yeah, the guy that is separating from Heidi Klum.  that Seal.  he said he and Heidi were surprised about separating.  as if they didn't have any control over it?!

pps. he then sang his rendition of "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green.  the one that says "lovin you forever..."  was it supposed to be a crazy joke?  it was tragic.

ppps. what about the kids? so sad. so very very sad.

I, too, think it is very sad about Seal and Heidi Klum. Poor kids. :(

You're so funny. Possibly crazy too! And very, very brave! Haha! I hope the potty training goes better today! And yes, sad about Seal and Heidi Klum. Just when you think a Hollywood couple is one of the rare ones to actually stay married, they separate. And it is very unfair to all the kids. I almost feel like, knowing the lifestyle and pressures that come with fame, Hollywood types should know better than to get married at all. Which sounds so harsh, I know. Everyone wants to get married and I'm sure they think they'll stay married. But obviously there are reasons why Hollywood marriages don't last...

Oye, good luck with the rest of potty training. My Mom used the same method on my brother, and he was potty trained in 2 days!

I haven't been so upset about a celebrity break up since Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey! Those poor (GORGEOUS) kids!!

What was the salesman selling at your door? just curious. I am very surprised about Seal and Heidi - they always got remarried every year.

I was bummed about those two as well...they were always so cute together! And, you're right, stinks for the kids.

NO! i hadn't heard that. boy looks can be deceiving. they always put on a happy front didn't they. that's weirdness! i don't envy you right now. i think i aged 10 years during the potty training trials. may God be with you;)

Kelli said...

Such a brave woman you are! Sorry it isn't working out for Sage but glad that your little man is 'getting it'! Cutting the diaper budget in half is the next best thing to eliminating it.

And door-to-door sales? A person would have to be insane. Too many nutjobs out there.

Way to go with potty training courage. :) E turned 2 in October and I am just putting it off. Ha. I am thinking we will do it in May once we are done with our 3 mornings a week at school. I might need some tips!!! Good luck!

I get it, twice as much work but all at the same time:) Anyways, hope today goes well. We've got number 1 all down pat over here....its the number 2 which is causing a wee bit of torture on this mama!

Woohoo for Hunter! Don't blame you for putting Sage back in diapers, either. Atlhough, man, wouldn't it be nice to have them both done?! That's how I feel with my two. But Sprig isn't anywhere near ready, gosh darnit.

Ashley said...

wait - what?! seal & heidi...what the heck?! total bummer.

love reading your blog....after spending a few minutes here, I have serious blog envy!

Oooh potty training! What a load of fun, I'm sure! Haven't been there yet ....but someday! :) Sounds like it's going reasonably well, considering you're training two and all! Hope things work out! That will be nice to have less to no diapers.

Good luck in conquering the potty training. Hope the good Lord grants you with patience. And btw - I'll never understand celebrities, especially when it comes to their kids. :( Blessings.

Anne said...

oh wow! good luck with the potty training! what a glorious day it will be when there are no more diapers :)

You are a brave woman. Thankful that Hunter did well. And I don't blame you at all for putting Sage back into her diapers. I hope Hunter continues to make progress!

Oh I hear ya sistah on the potty training. I attempted with my 2 year old in December and it was a messy messy failure. I reeeally need to try again, but reeeeally don't want to. I figure my goal is before she turns three, which is in August, so I will probably procrastinate until July. Good luck! Hope it's a drier day for you!

I found such freedom in thinking "he won't be in diapers in high school"

and one day...poof. he decided HE was ready after I had tried off and on other times. And guess what...it took him 4 days.

So, with the twins I ain't doin nothing! :)

Oh...and yes...totally sad about Seal/Klum. It never ceases to surprise me when celebrities split. I just don't get used to it.

I have never been a Heidi fan. I am sad for their kids.
Good luck with the pee diaries. I have lived through it and made it to the other side. You will too.

Yay for Hunter! Potty training was my worst nightmare. I strongly agree that if they are not ready for it, its just not gonna work. And Seal and Heidi? Shocking, isn't it?! They always seemed so connected that this one took me by surprise. Happy Wednesday!

I feel had for their kids to...and for you! Ha! Potty training 2 at one time ohmyword...

Good Luck on potty training! Keep up posted! :)

You are one brave momma to try and potty train two at one time! Sounds like Hunter did great though! Hopefully Sage will follow right along soon:)

Yay, for a pretty successfulday, I'd say. Hunter, sounded so excited about what he is doing when we talked and I hope he continues feeling that excited with his accomplishment.

Natalie said...

haha this is funny! good for you for giving it a go! :) My friends tried the 3 day method with their 14 month old who could barely walk or talk. Needless to say it was a long weekend and not very successful haha ;)

u are one brave girl...i always just waited until 2.5 yr to try...with my boys they just woke up at 3 poo/pee/night trained...never had an accident...it was like that with kate at 2.5. don't get me started with lily pie

shesh...she was 3 in sept and just now doing good....my problem with her wasn't accidents...it was holding...she would hold her pee for 24 hrs and her poo for 7+ days..i was in tears with frustration....

Way to go! I started potty-training the twins around 2. Nolan literally got it in one day, easy peezy. Ty and Reese took a few weeks and a lot more patience. It feels amazing to be diaper free though- Good luck on the rest of your training!

-and I totally feel bad for the kids too- I thought they were one of the rare hollywood couples that would stay together :(

I tried for a day to potty train LB then gave up. Must get back on that to hopefully have him trained before #2 arrives. Way to be ambitious and try 2 at once! And I'm so curious as to what happened with the door to door salesman. Cliff hanger? ;)

Dixie Bell Designs said...

Haha you are really funny and brave! go hunter!! Atleast having to change only half the diapers will be a win in itself! I was shocked when I heard about heidi and seal... I am so not into celeb gossip really but I have always liked those two. so sad!

Lauren said...

I think that's the scariest thing looming out there in the future for me... potty training. yikes! :/

hannah singer said...

potty training is the bane of this house. four fails out of four tries. we have some new ideas now though, so maybe we will try again next month.

also, seal and heidi broke my heart.

I'm glad potty training is going well for your little boy. My daughter just turned 3 and is just now officially trained. I didn't stress about it and like another commenter said.. we knew she'd be trained by high school. It'll happen. :) My 17 month old son has been interested in going potty for several weeks now. I tossed around the idea of trying to train both kids at the same time but 17 months seems a little young (to me) to stress about it. Like you said.. cutting out half the cost of diapers is better than nothing. :)

Katie said...

I giggled about Hunter sitting on his shirt. I have me a child like that, I can see it now.

Also, did I ever tell you about the time a salesman with a tattoo of a dollar sign on his forehead came to my door selling me tire cleaner? Good times, good times.

onceuponagrainofsand said...

Yay Hunter! And Sage ;) 3 day method?? I've never heard of that, but it sounds like a grand plan :)

UGH I detest door-to-door anything! They always come in the middle of naptime, too... never when Eli is awake...

Tatiana said...

We just bought a potty this last weekend. Let's just say it didn't go very well at all. Girlfriend wanted nothing to do with it and cried every time she was near it. We may wait a little while before trying again.
But YAY Hunter! That should save you some time and money :-)
And anyone who wakes up my kid from her nap is dead to me. Just joking. Not really.

sandi said...

if you have a fenced in back yard take the potty outside and let them run free. accidents outside clean inside. happy potty training to a mom who has three out of diapers. and yes, they will not go to kindergarden in diapers.

Emily w/Amazing Grapes said...

YES! Its so sad they split. I don't understand it...especially if that's what he actually said on the show. =/

Whoa momma, I think you're awesome for giving it a go. I hope that little man of yours catches on for good, lickity split!!

Okay, totally mailing diapers for that poor tortured youngest child of yours ;)
and as for Seal ... every year they had a huge fancy white wedding on their anniversary ... go figure?

Sorry I have not been around. That thing called life?
Totally taking over my everything of late ;)

Potty training can take a grown woman and make her bawl and beg for her mommy. Just remember that most kids don't begin kindergarten still in diapers. (That's supposed to be encouragement for the days you don't feel like it's ever going to happen. Someone once told me that and I remembered it often... and often wondered if my child would be the first. Ha!) Hang in there girl!

you are a very brave mama!
me+potty training=nightmare!
don't EVEN ask about how we trained our now 6 year old. oy.
so glad those days are over...for now. :)

ps i secretly pray for hardwood, too.
a LOT!

Yay for Hunter!! That is great in only one day! I did the 'no pants' thing with Adi, and it really worked!!! I love not buying diapers:)

Alely said...

oh girl, funny how i forgot what it was like to potty train michael and meagan who are 13.5 months apart! Hunter and Sage will get there and soon you will forget those potty training days too. : )

julia said...

Boys are so easy to potty train...you open the back door and say "there you go".

deborah said...

Kudos to you for giving it a whirl! And, yay for your little man! Potty training was one of the biggest things for me in raising toddlers. Looking back I think I would just wait longer. Some kiddos learn at a really young age, but my kiddos weren't that way!

Lea also known as "CiCi" said...

Well, one out of two is pretty good! I bet Sage will catch on soon. Our Princess is showing signs of being interested and she's 27 months. Her momma plans to trainer this summer.

Hope it's still going well with Hunter. Hugs!
