the life and times of carissa.

in case you wondered, this is what i wore for valentine's day. i thought about getting all dolled up, but my honey really prefers me without makeup and in jeans/t-shirt type of attire. he doesn't have to tell me twice; i went low-key for him.  plus, a hoodie with CALI LOVE for this california girl? a must for Valentine's day.

i set out on the midnight train to georgia or nowhere or something like that when i officially signed up for twitter late last night. really my husband did it for me. he said it is better than facebook? i half believed him. and in the same day i downloaded instagram.  seriously, was it my last day to live or something?  because between blogging, facebook, pinterest, twitter, and instagram it could be entirely possible to only do social media for a living without getting paid. it's a crazy new and fast world, that twitter is.  i'm trying to catch up. find me so i can find you:

on to slightly more meaningful things.  it's kinda funny watching Valentine's day play out on facebook.  people show pictures of what their significant other's gifted them for the day, hoping to outdo their friends. well, sorry gals, but my honey outdid them all.  he bought me an individual serving size package of Cadbury eggs. yes, that's Easter candy for Valentine's day.  i could not have asked for anything better. and yes, this is totally undoing my no sugar february. maybe i'll just try again in march?

i'll admit, i'm not a hopeless romantic, but once in a while i can get sentimental.  yesterday, with love in the air, i got the dreamy(?) idea of going through my old photo boxes.  the kind that hold your entire life's memories - the good, the bad, the sweet, the sad, all of it.  instead of crying my way through the photos while seeing my nine year old self in the last pictures i'd ever take with my dad, i actually got tickled while looking at my ever changing figure and hair.

my hair has been a sight to behold from the very beginning.

this goes out to all my real-life friends who don't believe me when i tell them i was chunky:
at least i was tan? this was the haircut that led to the school photographer calling me a boy.  i'm still trying to recover. this is THE reason Sage will always have long hair... she'll thank me later.

at least i was tan, again? this seemed so cool at the time.

#1 reason why i will never get bangs ever or wear Roxy sweater shirts:

somehow, my hair survived it all and turned out okay. i'm just glad it ended up curly (contrary to the picture on the very top... once in a while i go for smooth) and i hardly have to fix it.  because, i'm telling you, it's a beast that is hard to tame.

the moral of this story: be glad you are an adult and have the cognitive awareness to make good hair choices.

ps. even though i am an adult, i'm still waiting for my acne to go away. i'm banking on my grandma's promise that oily skin just means less wrinkles.  let's hope she's right.  if you get zits like me, what kind of face wash do you use?  tell me as long as it doesn't cost 25 dollars. my pores along with my pocketbook thank you.

what are you talking about? you're skin looks like perfection in that first pic of you with no make up!

i can't believe that you were ever chunky and the hair do's....yup i had those too and mine were worse since i grew up in the 80's! I also had a short haircut and was called a boy one time by some cashier at a store.

welcome to twitter! with all of these social media circles i tend to go through my spurts i'm usually on two of them consistently for a few days then i'll move on to another two for another few days....it's crazy trying to manage it all. anyhoo, i will be following you on twitter! would love to follow you on instagram too!

have a great day beautiful and hopefully you left some of those cadbury chocolate eggs to enjoy for today!
xo,

I have oily skin myself, and the best thing I have found so far is the facewash at Trader Joe's. It honestly works better than even the expensive stuff I've purchased in the past!
Love those chunky girl pictures from my past... it's good to see that someone else had a chunky-girl phase as well! :)

So fun! Like the old pictures. My husband always says he loves it best when I look comfy. For the longest time I didn't believe him, but after 2 years, I'm really starting to. Last night, for Vday dinner, I wore jeans and a cute little heart tank (from the Old Navy Clearance rack!).

my daughter who goes to a dermatologist. they recommend Cetaphil (I believe that's how you spell it) its in Target/Walgreens.

I will find you on Twitter :). I think I'd love Twitter except no one I know in real life is on it. Everyone's on Facebook. So, I do both but don't have many Twitter friends yet.

Also- I was totally chubby at that same age and had horrible frizzy short-ish hair with bangs. Awful.

Girl. I found some Neutrogena Rapid Clear Oil Control face wash FOR NINETY CENTS in a CVS clearance bin two years ago. It was the best EVER. I hoarded mine for Summer and it lasted forever. You just need a tiny dab. http://www.thefind.com/beauty/browse-neutrogena-oil-control-cleanser

thanks for the laugh:) and I believe I would be able to pull up some old pictures of similar hair-cuts....similar bangs and similar clothing.....must have been a time period....

I have more acne now then in highschool - and I've stopped using anything fancy and am down to basics, simply spectro gel and a light moisturizer. I too cling to the hopes that acne in your mid twenties means smoother skin in our 60's....

Your skin does look amazing in your makeup-free pic, but I am in the same boat as you with the whole I-thought-acne-was-only-for-teenagers syndrome. I'm 29 and within the past 6 months I have seen a major improvement by ditching the "acne" creams all together and using moisturizer day and night. I use Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Daily Mattifying Lotion SPF 15 which is not very expensive at all and the tube lasts awhile. I also started using the basic Oil of Olay fragrance-free foaming face wash and love that too. I always battled with oily skin and it is noticeable better now that I moisturize.

you are stunning friend! omg I wish i looked that good without makeup! Wow you look fabulous in the last shot with your skinny self and beautiful curly hair lol :) I love that he got you cadbury eggs awesome those are my fav! OMG I had to chuckle at your facebook comment for I was thinking the same thing reading and rolling my eyeballs last night lol...hmmm maybe that's why I have a headache today lol! This was such a cute fun post! Hey I have heard pro active works like a charm but it is pricey...I also heard Neutrogena works really well!

I love looking at horrible old pictures. I call 3rd-8th grade the what was I thinking years? I had perms, bangs, bigger bangs, boy hair cuts, all of it. Although I never did the whole head of braids, it's probably because our family trip to Jamaica didn't happen until I was a junior in high school and actually knew better. Although my little sister did go for it, and when she took them all out, it was awesome! Thanks for sharing you're awesome pictures with us :)

i LOVE your hair. love.

First of all you are adorable and your skin looks great! But this was a funny post to read through:-) I had the huge puff bangs in high school and some in college...so glad I became an adult and realized the error of my way!!

So tell me how is twitter??? I have been trying to decide if I really need to add that to all the other "media" things I do already.

I think I had that same tye-dyed outfit or something similar! LOL! I am on twitter too but I am not sure how to use it properly. It also drives me crazy to link it to my phone because then my phone goes crazy all day! Oh, I use the cheap up & up facewash from target. Not sure that helps but I rarely get pimples. Have a great day!

awww! you were and ARE adorable!!!!

you are absolutely gorgeous! :)

Oh the awkwardness of growing up :) I think we all have the same hair mistakes...but the last pic of you is GORGEOUS! I wish I had hair with that much texture and volume!

Cadbury mini eggs are indeed THE BEST. Your hubby is a definite keeper ;)

Stephanie said...

OMGosh! I love your hair pictures- and although I can relate to the boy cute- the braids are by far the best- too funny! I have considered doing a post like this about the evolution of my eyebrows or should I say at one time "eyebrow". :) Either way, you're beautiful!

And I have always had skin issues, I've learned consistency and pregnancy worked best- lol! I used Clinique foaming face wash- it's a bit expensive but I promise you only use a pea size and it lasts FOREVER, it's very mild :)

Happy Wednesday!

Following you on Twitter now!

Haha yeah, I was not a cute kid from 4th-9th grade. I had the bangs and big Harry Potter-ish glasses, and unibrow. Pictures are always good for smiles though, yes??

I just use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash and a Neutrogena concealer and try really hard not to touch my face. But I get mistaken for 16 all the time so not sure if I'm a good example to follow ;)

I recently got a twitter and instagram and I haven't really gotten the hang of instagram just yet. I have posted 2 pictures. One day tho...

I was not cute at some stages of my life and some days I'm convinced that now is one of them..depending on how good I feel when I wake up in the mornings!

Krystle said...

Pretty sure I had the same haircut in 8th grade.
Great post...I need to do something like this.

And I need the same face help...I am how old and still need acne face wash!?!? I will be watching your comments to see if I can glean from them :)

Happy Wednesday!

Hahaha! You were a cute little girl. :) But I must say, your hair looks much better now.
Okay, so maybe I'm not an adult, but I do have some acne to speak of. :P Washing your face regularly is all that I do, excepting the occasional soapy water thing. That's never more than once a week.

Also, did you know that the more you wash your face (say, twice a day) it fights to produce more oil, and therefore gets even more oily? Crazy, right? So I try not to wash up too much. :)

hope that helps!
hugs,
~bree

Your skin looks perfect, but I find the best face wash is Clean & Clear Continuous Acne Cleanser! About $5-6 at Target!

haha I'm so glad I'm an adult too. my kid pictures are too scary to ever post! But you were a cutey! Maybe i'll check out twitter.

LeahJo said...

About FB and people trying to outdo eachother on gifts? You can say that again. I began to get a little dizzy with so many Vday postings!
Glad that holiday is over. lol.

Your hair turned out amazing! it definitely looks healthy and vibrant.

And um, the braids...kinda cute! :)

i think you are cute in all of them. and i'm not just sayin' that. i loved the bangs!

you are beautiful, carissa!

i am still waiting on my acne to go away as well... i get a pill from my dermatologist that normally helps (right now its off the charts bad, i think its stress) on top of that, i have sensitive skin so its super difficult to have good face wash. let me know if you come across anything fabulous!

i'm like you - did my face get the memo that i'm 27 now?!

So excited you are on twitter now. I love it SO much more than facebook! I just started following you. I am laneconn. Let's talk! :) Ha!

This post was awesome!! I have some very scary kid pictures, myself. Especially the time my grandma butchered my hair to practically nothing because a certain brother spilled the beans about me having... I can't say it, so I'll spell it out... l-i-c-e.. bleh! Good: her chopping it off got rid of it. Bad: it was an absolutely HORRIBLE haircut. ;( I still shudder...

I agree that Twitter is better than FB..you'll see. ;)
And that last picture of you is gorgeous!!!!

That is all.

Happy to see you on Twitter, I bet you'll love it! Your hair is beautimous! Not gonna lie, though. I giggled at the picture of your beaded braids. ;)

Ashley said...

Oh my...the hair, the skin....I can relate to all of it. I've been working so hard on growing my hair out and I'm so, so tempted to just chop it. I will regret it, I think. But it just may be worth the risk. This girl needs a change. Or something.

And the skin. Please tell me why a 27 year old mama should be battling zits!!! I use Neutrogena anything. Right now it's a green tinted cleanser (to tame redness?!) - it's super thick and creamy, and it has 'acne' something-or-other in the title. It's good, and I like it much.

Tracey said...

I also like Cetaphil or Neutragena but the absolute best thing for my skin is wearing less makeup (just coverup so I can go to work without showing off red spots..) and downing lots of water. Taking it easy on sugar should help too. I agree with the consensus You're gorgeous but I hope you find something to give you the healthy skin you want

Oh, the old hair photos! We all have them. I cringe when I see my elementary school bangs that started at the back of my head and my middle school perm - ugh! For face wash, I love Philosophy's Purity Made Simple. I have used it for about 8 years and I love it!!

Joyeful said...

oh my golly! YOU are the greatest! Love, love love those baby pics!! totally cracked me up! And um, your skin looks perfect! what are you talking about?! If you find a magical face wash PLEASE tell me...I'm a little desperate. I mean, I'm 29 and I still break out like a school girl...when does this end?? I've heard that same line you have: oily skin gets less wrinkles (do you think they're just trying to make us feel better or something?)

Grace said...

We all have those pictures...whenever I laugh at mine and tell my mom how ridiculous looking I was she always says, "Oh, you were so cute!" Only a mom could have thought I was cute during those times...:)

Holly said...

I use Mary Kay TimeWise Facewash. The good: my face has never been clearer, and it lasts at least 6 months or more because you only use a little drop each time. The bad: It costs $18 :-\

But seriously, this stuff is magic. I use the moisturizer too, which is $22, way too pricey, but those 2 combined and my face is clearer than ever...and I used to use Clean n Clear and all those 'no-acne' washes....this is the only thing that does the trick.

Tiffany said...

Hahaha, you're so cute!! I love your wild baby hair. And I'm totally jealous of your gorgeous long curly hair!

Alicia said...

oh my goodness...you are too funny :) i don't think i'm brave enough to go through pics of my awkwardness.
but i do have oily skin, but i think i'm still getting wrinkles. boo :( and i use just your basic dove soap. the one for oily people. either that or oil of olay...don't pay attention to the misleading name.

I loved this post! I had the same short hair/boyish haircut & I want Addison to have long hair so she doesn't look back & hate her pictures like I do!

Yay for Twitter! I just followed you!

You are adorable! Your honey knows you so well to buy you those sweets for Valentine's Day...that's what really matters, the little things. Ooh, I'll have to check you out on Twitter...though I don't tweet that much. I'm still kind of lost about the whole thing. Have a wonderful weekend :)

Oh my heavens, can I ever relate to you in this post! I had the most horrible haircuts as a kid. I kid you not. Once my step dad decided that it would be a good idea for them to shave my head bc my hair may get thicker if they did it. I still feel like trowing up when I remember. Yes, thank God for the ability to make our own decision. If my hair will look like crap, at least it's bc i made that decision.
I'm off to twitter-friend you :-)

So, I did not read all of the comments. If someone already suggested this - or you've already tried it, sorry...I just recently have had the worst acne that I've ever had in my life. Now, that's not saying much because it's still not as bad as what several of my friends had to go through. Anyway, I made it through my teens with minor break outs here and there. Now, I'm in my 20's and find more frequent break outs and not just here and there, but what seems like here and here and here and here.....

About a month ago, I found "the oil cleansing method" on pinterest. When I saw it, I thought, "Yeah, right, that's just what I need." But, the more I read about it, I decided to try it. When I stick with it, I really like it. It doesn't dry out my face like some of the washes/treatments I've used. And it keeps things under control.

It's worth a try - check it out! http://simplemom.net/oil-cleansing-method/

i am 44 and still battling oily skin. *kiss my face* olive oil soap is my favorite ~ no parabans or anything bad for your body in the ingredient list. it's only a couple of bucks a bar (i get mine at bed bath and beyond and use a coupon) and the bar is huge. i usually cut it into thirds so it will not melt on the soap dish.
