i made a book :: scripture scraps

i forget that kids have an incredible capacity to memorize things. which further emphasizes the need to get them learning before they become like me and forget to even bring the shopping list to the grocery store, that i wrote for once. for goodness sakes.

i was reading Hunter a nursery rhyme book - full of nonsense really. have you ever listened to them, like really? they are dumb. like why would i sing my child to sleep telling them a cradle will fall and down will come baby. now go to sleep sweetly. my child. you are safe. anyways, sitting there next to my boy in his twin bed with striped blue sheets, he opens his tiny mouth and tells me almost every rhyme in that book of twenty.

whoa.

am i the mom of a genius?? i know better. this is normal. God gives kids such an ability to learn and absorb and remember. sometimes i wish i could remember how good it felt to remember.

so, instead of filling Hunter's growing mind with dead rhymes, why not fill it with life breathing Scripture.

and Scripture Scraps was born. it came to me all on it's own, without pinterest even, during a car ride, where i was the driver... i hoped and prayed i would remember this idea until i had a chance to stop and write it down. well i did remember. so this must really be something.
also? i have been wishing for a good excuse to buy a smash book. with a 40% coupon in hand, i headed to Michael's with a kick in my step like i was fulfilling some life-long dream. i got my hoped-for smash book, some tape, pockets, and papers. all for $14.

SUPPLIES:
1. smash book (or any type of scrapbook or journal)
2. tape/glue/pen (the awesome thing is that smash books are sold with a fancy pen that doubles as a glue stick)
3. 3x5 cards or blank notecards for verses
4. stickers, flashcards, whatever your heart so desires
i wanted to make this easy and vintagey coupled with lots of fun, colors, and random. you gotta keep the little ones interested with every page.
i picked out some verses (they don't have to be easy ones... challenge their young minds!), to go with the smash book pages, and wrote them on the notecards. there is a visual trigger on each page, helping Hunter remember what the verse is about. here are some of ours:
my favorite page:
forgive me if this isn't really a lamb. i consulted with my biology loving husband and he said a lamb was his best bet. so i went with it:
inside this pocket are pictures of Hunter and Sage:

the kids are thrilled over this.

Hunter: mom, you made this fo me??

Me: i sure did.

Hunter: i'm so extited, mom!!!

we will read this book every day. or ideally anyway. Sage wants to color all over it at this point. but that just means she thinks it's fun. i'm sure of it.

ps. if you have yet to enter the giveaway to win a gorgeous clutch, do so here! hurry, it ends Thursday at 9pm EST.

Btw, as a big sis to many, I have to agree with the nursery rhyme statement...they are so weird. It takes a lot to convince me to read them to the little guys...and I love reading with them :) How much better to teach the the Word of God?

Maybe I can actually see it when we come to SC next month. I look so forward to finally meeting you.

  50. Great idea! So true about kids being able to memorize everything. When I was little my mom always had us listen to Judy Rogers who sang a lot of songs that were verses from the bible as well as the catechism. To this day it amazes me how much I can still remember.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That is a wonderful idea, and so beautifully done! Thanks for sharing!

  52. I am so glad to find this idea!! It will be so fun to make! When my oldest was little I found an old Bible memory book from the 70's called the ABC book of verses. Lately I have seen it back in print. It was an easy and fun way to learn verses. I haven't been as diligent with teaching it to my youngest. Your post has motivated me! THANKS!!

  53. Such a GREAT idea! Kids love anything personalized, and they are so visual. I totally agree, challenge them! They remember more than we think they do.

  70. This is an amazing and inspiring idea. I catch myself thinking up my own childrens stories to tell my son... but what better than scripture which tells an ultimate story in itself. Great idea to enrichment the minds of our little ones and raise them in the way they should go.

  71. Thanks for sharing, what a great idea! Off to buy another smash journal!! (Aren't they just great!?!)

  72. This is utterly amazing!! Would you be willing to be a guest blogger on my site? We can do a weekly theme on the importance of teaching our children God's Word.

Please take a look at my site: http://dailyremindersfromgod.com, and click on the tab, "Be a Guest Blogger." Look around the site and see what you think. This idea would be perfect for one of my Dig In Series, but I don't want to "use" it or borrow it, or even share it. I'd like YOU to share it with my readers. I hope you'll consider it.

    God bless!

  73. I repinned this today, but as I always do, I checked the original source to make sure the link worked. I use Sonlight in my homeschool, and in the early grades, they have a weekly memory verse (and a CD of songs to go with them). After seeing your idea, I think I will implement your idea, but have my child take part in creating the book, starting this coming fall when she does Core K. Each week, as she learns the verse, she can put her own images in the scrap book as visual reminders of the Bible verse. Thanks for a great idea for me to springboard off of!

I'm thinking I'll be getting a couple of smash books and letting them have at it with the verses we're memorizing. Thank you so much for sharing!

  95. Wonderful idea! I think it would be wonderful for great literature, learning the presidents, states, addition, sight words, letters, numbers, etc. My 2 1/2 year old grandson knows all his letters by sight and many sight words just by giving him a big notebook and "coloring" with him, putting Mom's name, her phone number, address, etc. Go Moms!

  101. Ok, so I know this is like a YEAR later after this post, but it is worth commenting on, so here it goes! Thank you so much for giving us this idea. I found you on pinterest and I'm so in love with this idea that I just ran out to Pat Catans (youngest child in tow) and scooped up everything SMASH! I am so excited to make a scripture book for my three children for Christmas (8,6, and 3yearsold). It will be the most valuable (for their souls/treasured/heartmatters/everything Jesus/blessed/in Christ's name) gift my husband and I will give this year. We also vacation every year to Charleston to see my husband's uncle and I plan on contacting you before we come to see if we can get family pics. I am a photographer myself, but need some awesome pics with me included!! Thank you so much for the idea and hopefully we will talk after the first of the year for a session in late March. Sincerely, Becky Snyder
